About

Education Programs includes activities such as the Summer Music and Theater Academy, music and vocal training, the Vegas City Children's Chorus, sight singing, ear training, and proper vocal technique. The program also offers Opera@Lunch, Opera Time & Opera by the Book, and The Science of Opera. Music and vocal training is offered for ages 8–16 with top teaching artists and solo selections for each level of instruction.

• Ages: 8–16 years old
• Schedule: Summer Music and Theater Academy runs June 16–29, 2025, Monday–Friday from 10 a.m.–3 p.m., and the Vegas City Children's Chorus Fall & Winter Session 2025 runs February 3–April 28 on Tuesdays from 6–7:30 p.m.
• Price: Summer Music and Theater Academy and Vegas City Children's Chorus Fall/Winter Session 2025 each have a $150 registration fee with scholarships available.

The Summer Music and Theater Academy includes a final performance on the main stage on June 28 at 3:00 p.m. Vegas City Children's Chorus offers solo opportunities and the chance to perform in Vegas City Opera’s main stage production on October 13 and 14, with a final concert on December 8. Opera@Lunch is a 20–30 minute pop-up concert introduction to opera during lunch time for K–12 students. Opera Time & Opera by the Book is a 45 minute presentation for K–12 students, and The Science of Opera is a 45 minute STEAM-focused presentation for grades 4–12. All levels are welcomed in an inclusive choir where music theory and solfège is taught through the lens of performing and joyful music making that blends wellness, empowerment and community with a strong sense of self. Sweet 16 Season 2025–2026 events are free and open to the public. The leadership team includes Executive Director Ginger Land-van Buuren, Artistic Director Skip Galla Katipunan, Director of Education & Outreach and President of the Board Marcie Ley, Programs Director Rebecca Morris, and Artistic Liaison Dr. Richard L. Hodges. Ginger Land-van Buuren was a Portland Opera Resident Artist and is a member of Actor's Equity and SAG. Skip Galla Katipunan studied voice at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut. Rebecca Morris is a graduate of Northern Arizona University and has received certificates from the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, The Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute, The Opera Academy of California in San Francisco, The Crittenden Opera Theater Institute in Washington, DC, and the Flagstaff in Fidenza program in Fidenza, Italy, and has 20 years of experience teaching and training young singers. Richard L. Hodges received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a Master of Music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Bachelor of Music from North Carolina Central University.

The mission of Vegas City Opera is stated as “The passionate voice of an indispensable art form,” with a focus on bringing music to the community and visitors, reinventing, reimagining and recreating experiences that inspire the curious and the seasoned, and using the world around them to tell stories in a distinct and accessible way. Vegas City Opera is a 501(c)3 Nevada non-profit. The programs are offered in partnership with the Las Vegas Sinfonietta and the City of Las Vegas, and are presented by Jeri Crawford and the City of Las Vegas, with in-school, library, and recreation center programs and performances. VCO is described as always interested in new ways to reach the community. Tickets for Philip Glass's La Belle et la Bête are listed at $35, $20 for seniors, with free rush tickets for students at the door.
