The program’s mission statement says that, provided by a skilled staff, Carson Valley Swim Center will deliver a safe, customer-service-driven environment, innovative programming that is responsive to the needs of a diverse community, and a clean and well-managed facility. Lifeguards are certified in shallow and deep water lifeguarding, CPR, first aid, AED use, and the administration of oxygen, and water aerobics classes are led by certified instructors. Adult Learn-to-Swim classes are taught by a certified US Swimming Masters Instructor, and several instructors are certified to instruct and certify others to become lifeguards, including through annual Certified Pool Operator Training offered to staff and the public.
The leadership team includes Director Shannon Harris; Aquatic Supervisors EMT Sarah Davenport, Paul Uhrig, and Justin Gross; Office Administrator/Cashier Supervisor Sherrie Taylor; Maintenance Supervisor Dave Long; and a board with a chair, vice chair, and trustees. Staff credentials include certifications such as Certified Pool Operator, Certified Parks and Recreation Executive, EMT, Lifeguard Instructor, Water Fitness Instructor, United States Swim Coach, Water Safety Instructor, Water Safety Instructor Trainer, PHTA instructor, and POOL/PACT Essential Management certification. The Swim Center has received the Nevada Recreation and Parks Association’s Elmer H. Anderson Parks Excellence Award, the National Recreation and Parks Association’s Excellence in Aquatics Award, has been voted by the community the “Best Place to Take Your Kids” for 9 years in a row, and is a recipient of the Loss Control Excellence Award presented by Pool Pact.
Carson Valley Swim Center Programs are closely linked to the local school district, senior community, and public safety departments, and host and co-teach two Douglas High School aquatics classes each semester. Each spring, the Swim Center hires 25–30 students as lifeguards for the upcoming summer and is one of the largest teen employers in Douglas County. Groups from Northern Nevada elementary and middle schools, Douglas County’s Adventure Camp, Northern Nevada Boys & Girls Clubs, privately owned daycare centers, and three rural schools from California visit for group swim lessons and water safety instruction. The facility hosts the Douglas High School Swim and Dive Team, the Douglas Dolfins Swim Team, the Killer Whales Special Olympics Team, and US Masters Swimming members, and partners with physical and occupational therapy providers who treat patients in the 93-degree therapy pool. The Swim Center has partnered with Brad Hollander and uses the germ-fighting power of copper film on door handles.
Parents have shared that the facility has slides, diving boards, a lap pool, a shallow pool that is 1–2.5 feet deep for kids, warm and cold pools, inside and outside pools, a kids splash zone, balls, a basketball hoop, a climbing wall that arches over one of the pools, exercise equipment, hot food, snacks, drinks, a pool store, picnic tables, changing rooms, showers, and bathing suit dryers. Reviews mention that staff are kind and helpful, lifeguards are described as awesome, the facility is clean, and there are lots of opportunities for kid play in the afternoons. Families note that there are very reasonable daily prices or memberships, family pricing, the option to bring snacks and drinks, and that the upstairs party room that can hold 30 is available for after-hours birthday parties at a fair price.
