Project Discovery has a twenty-five year tradition of helping young people experience the joy of becoming stronger, more confident and able to connect with others. The program operates a Ropes Challenge Course consisting of more than 50 low and high elements. Project Discovery Camps are intentionally small with a high staff to camper ratio, and the camps are described as child driven rather than program driven. The mission statement notes that staff members work to make sure each child is successfully challenged, that Camp Coaches are leadership focused, and that camps are personalized to each child’s needs and developmental level, with daily debriefs focused on how to best work together to meet camper needs. Project Discovery is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
The leadership team includes Mike Selby, Ed.D., who has successfully completed a doctorate degree in the discipline of The Social-Psychology of Leadership. Project Discovery offers a Leadership Academy designed for Counselors-In-Training, and participants in Leadership Adventure stay in tipis at Project Discovery. For River Camp and Backcountry Camp, group gear and all food are provided with the exception of breakfast and lunch on the first day, and backpacks, sleeping bags, and pads are available to rent. For Leadership Adventure, all meals are provided with the exception of breakfast and lunch for Monday.
The mission statement describes the camps as inclusive, supportive and detailed, with a focus on leadership, responsibility, friendship and fun, and on supporting more effective skill building, behavioral maturity and social-emotional growth. Project Discovery works with groups such as Truckee Meadows Community College, Sepulveda Elementary School, Resorts West, BLM Fire Carson City, Pioneer High School, Sierra Nevada Academy, California Franchise Tax Board, University of Nevada Reno, Wild Island Adventure Park, Granite Construction, American Building & Maintenance, Entrepreneurs Organization, Coldwell-Banker Real Estate, and Merril-Lynch, as indicated by testimonials from these organizations. Testimonials from teachers, schools, colleges, and organizations describe experiences that include team building and trust activities, meaningful interactions, and positive changes for groups and teams.
