• Ages: 3–15 years old

Founded in 1947, Green Chimneys has grown from a 75-acre dairy farm to 550 combined acres that include farm, garden, and outdoor adventure spaces, as well as a 350-acre nature area with a Model Forest that promotes learning about forest management and water conservation. The organization is led by Chief Executive Officer Kristin Dionne and operates accredited day camp programs for children and teens at Hillside and Clearpool Summer Campsites, along with a therapeutic day school and residential treatment center. Green Chimneys is an accredited special education school on two campuses and is recognized as a worldwide leader in animal-assisted therapy and educational activities for children with special needs, using a nature-based model that includes animal-assisted therapy and nature-based therapeutic programs.

Green Chimneys is home to over 300 farm animals, horses, and unreleasable wildlife, and incorporates an organic farm and gardens into nature study and sustainable practices, including a philosophy that not all animals are there to be hugged, which is taught through wildlife. The program maintains small class sizes and a high staff-to-student ratio, with an 8:1:2 student to faculty to teaching assistant ratio, and employs certified teaching staff. Green Chimneys is part of the surrounding community, collaborates with local and regional schools to provide hands-on environmental learning, offers community-based support for at-risk, runaway, homeless, and foster care youth and families in crisis in Putnam County, and provides a 24-hour hotline for urgent youth services, as well as public education and recreation opportunities for all ages.
