Green Chimneys was founded in 1947 as a multi-faceted nonprofit organization. Its mission is to help young people maximize their full potential by providing residential, educational, clinical, and recreational services in a safe and supportive environment that nurtures connections with their families, the community, animals, and nature. Green Chimneys services include an accredited special education school on two campuses with certified teaching staff, and the organization is recognized as a worldwide leader in animal-assisted therapy and educational activities for children with special needs. Kristin Dionne is the Chief Executive Officer of Green Chimneys.

The program uses a nature-based model that includes human-animal connection, animal-assisted therapy, and nature-based therapeutic programs. Its campuses include farm, garden, and outdoor adventure spaces, along with a 350-acre nature area that features a Model Forest to promote learning and best practices in forest management and water conservation. The farm and wildlife rehabilitation programs include over 300 farm animals, horses, and unreleasable wildlife, as well as a wildlife center with non-domesticated species such as eagles, hawks, and owls. An organic farm and gardens incorporate nature study and sustainable practices, and Boni-Bel Farm & Country Store offers fresh produce, organic products, and local crafts.

Green Chimneys offers dynamic summer camp programs for ages 4–15, early education and childcare through Nature’s Nursery programs, and year-round preschool and quality after-school programming. The public Farm & Wildlife Center is open for weekend visits. Green Chimneys is part of the surrounding community and collaborates with local and regional schools to provide hands-on environmental learning, provides support services to at-risk, runaway, homeless, and foster care youth and families in crisis within Putnam County, and offers public education and recreation opportunities for all ages, including family-friendly events and activities throughout the year.
