About
Maritime Adventure Camp includes sailing aboard dinghies, catamarans, and keelboats with an instructor and friends as crew, along with kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, and powerboating in the boat basin. Campers participate in boating excursions on the East River, swim and dive in the pool with access to diving boards, a climbing wall, and a log roll, and some sessions include swimming in the Long Island Sound. The program also offers marine environmental science activities such as seining for marine organisms, learning about buoyancy, and fishing, as well as indoor games, Color War and other team-building games, and Discover SCUBA diving in the pool for 7th–9th grades.
• Ages: 8–15 years old
• Schedule: Boat Camp sessions run for two weeks with full-day hours, and Splash Camp sessions run for one week with a standard day and an optional Extended Day add-on.
• Price: Boat Camp early registration ranges from $1800–$2000 per session and general registration from $1850–$2050; Splash Camp early registration ranges from $475–$600 per session and general registration from $525–$650, with Extended Day available for $250–$300 per session; the Dr. DeAngelis Financial Assistance and Scholarship Program awards range from 10–90% of the registration fee.
Maritime Adventure Camp includes instruction in seamanship and offers the opportunity for campers ages 10 and up to earn a New York Boating Safety Certificate through classroom-based Boating Safety certification courses. Lunch is provided in the main campus dining hall (Mess Deck), and all campers receive lunch, an afternoon snack, and all necessary equipment. Swimming is supervised by lifeguards, and formal swimming lessons are not offered during the camp day.
The program is led by industry professionals with decades of experience managing waterfront programming, and camp directors, instructors, lifeguards, counselors, and counselors-in-training are specially trained and certified to deliver activities for youth. The mission of Maritime Adventure Camp states that it is for everyone, and the Dr. DeAngelis Financial Assistance and Scholarship Program is intended for young people interested in getting out on the water in the summer who may not otherwise have the resources to participate. The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program is available for those entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade, and the CIT application process is structured like applying for a job, with applicants required to complete their own application.
Campers are grouped by age and sometimes by skill level at the discretion of the staff, and during registration families may request a mutual friend for team placement. Registration is first-come, first-served, and when sessions sell out, families can join an online wait list. Campers come from the Bronx, Westchester, Manhattan, northern New Jersey, and Long Island, and more photos of Maritime Adventure Camp are available on the program’s Facebook page.
Parent feedback includes comments that the camp combines fun and learning activities, that children felt accepted and expressed interest in becoming future CITs and counselors, and that parents valued hands-on real-life safety skills. Parents also noted a focus on safety, kindness, education, and inclusion, and mentioned that lunch being included worked even for picky eaters. Several parents described their children as engaged in water sports and boating, forming new friendships, and talking frequently about their daily camp experiences.
