About
Maritime Adventure Camp includes sailing aboard dinghies, catamarans, and keelboats with an instructor and friends as crew, along with kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Campers learn to safely operate a powerboat with hands-on training, explore seamanship and buoyancy, and can earn a New York Boating Safety Certificate starting at age 10. Activities also include fishing and seining for marine organisms to explore the marine environment and ocean science, swimming and diving in a pool with a climbing wall and log roll, Color War and other team-building games on the Quad, indoor games and on-shore activities in McMurray Hall, and Discover SCUBA diving in the pool for campers in 7th–9th grades.

Maritime Adventure Camp is led by industry professionals with decades of experience managing waterfront programming, and camp directors, instructors, lifeguards, counselors, and counselors-in-training are specially trained and certified to deliver the listed activities. Campers are grouped by age and sometimes skill level at the discretion of the staff, and during registration families may request a mutual friend to be paired on the same team. Lunch, an afternoon snack, and all equipment are provided for all campers, and swimming is supervised by lifeguards, though formal swimming lessons are not offered during the camp day. No boating or sailing experience is required to attend, and registration is first-come, first-served, with an online wait list available when sessions sell out.
Campers come from the Bronx, Westchester, Manhattan, northern New Jersey, and Long Island. Maritime Adventure Camp offers a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program for those entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade, where CITs work alongside counselors under the guidance of camp leadership, and the CIT application process is structured like applying for a job and must be completed by the applicants themselves. Campers 10 years and up can earn a New York Boating Safety Certificate, and SUNY Maritime College also offers a U.S. Coast Guard license program and the only Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program in New York City. The Dr. DeAngelis Financial Assistance and Scholarship Program provides awards ranging from 10–90% of the registration fee, with financial aid awarded on a rolling basis and priority consideration for applications received by January 15, 2026.
Parents describe the camp as including a mix of fun and learning activities, with comments noting water sports and boating, hands-on real-life safety skills, and education about water safety, boating, marine biology, and athletic activities. Parent testimonials also mention that children felt accepted, were interested in becoming future CITs and counselors, and that campers were engaged in creating new friendships and connecting with campers from various areas of the community. Several parents report that their children talked frequently about camp at home, enjoyed the included lunch options, and highlighted a focus on safety, kindness, education, and inclusion.
