Brooklyn Children’s Museum Programs are part of an institution founded in 1899 as the world’s first children’s museum and identified as New York City’s largest cultural institution designed especially for families. The museum’s mission states that it creates experiences that ignite curiosity, celebrate identity, and cultivate joyful learning, inspired by the energy of Brooklyn. The museum serves 300,000 children and caregivers annually with exhibits and programs grounded in visual arts, music and performance, natural science, and world cultures. Its program philosophy includes interdisciplinary and inquiry-based learning grounded in the collection, sensory learning through hands-on physical experiences, appreciation of culture and community with a focus on socio-emotional learning and interpersonal relationships, stimulating parent-child dialogue and providing family resources, and empowering children to think of themselves as agents of community change and inspiring responsible and civic engagement. The museum states that it serves all families regardless of ability to pay, builds community for parents and children, reaches beyond its walls into schools and other neighborhoods, uses local vendors and supports small business, employs Brooklynites and pays 100% of health premiums for staff, their spouses and dependents, and provides space and shares resources with other Brooklyn-based community-based organizations.
