Buffalo Seminary, founded in 1851, is an independent day and boarding school for girls and is Western New York’s only non-sectarian school for girls. The school is ranked #1 Best Private High School in WNY and enrolls students from across Western New York, the United States, and the world. Its mission states that Buffalo Seminary prepares a diverse group of young women to be engaged scholars and citizens, proud to shape society rather than be controlled by it, and ready to live and lead with honor, courage, and confidence.

The leadership team includes Head of School Blair Parker, Associate Head of School Natalie Stothart, Assistant Head of School Amanda Melsby, Director of Marketing and Communications Misty Harris, Director of Finance Denise Merrell, Dean of Students Eva Cunningham, Director of College Counseling Ann Leslie, Director of Technology Beth Adamczyk, and Athletics Director Kacie Mills. Community traditions at Buffalo Seminary include SEMachords spreading holiday cheer, the Buffalo Seminary Alumnae Association’s annual Holiday Bazaar, and the Hanging of the Greens tradition.

Assistant Head of School Dr. Amanda Melsby describes SEM’s strength as lying in close, collaborative relationships between faculty and students, with teachers creating personalized learning experiences rooted in respect for every student’s voice. A student, Leila from the Class of 2026, describes SEM as a safe place for education and personal growth with a variety of perspectives and an environment that supports equality through honest and deep discussions. Science and math teacher Jennifer Goetz-Bixby, Ph.D., describes her favorite part of working at SEM as the energy and joy of close collaboration in learning, including planning events like Hanging of the Greens and SEMinar Day and engaging in the give and take of ideas in the classroom.
