About
Kids of Courage is a volunteer-driven, non-profit traveling camp for critically ill children that includes visits to parks and attractions, chances to bond with new friends, and meetings with celebrities. The program’s flagship event is a nine day journey across the United States each summer, and over 50 children take part in a four-day adaptive skiing adventure on Mount Snow in Vermont each winter. Kids of Courage also offers a Dream & Wish trip, community weekends, VIP guest experiences with teams including the Yankees, Rangers, Jets, and Heat, recording songs with celebrities, and once flew on a private Boeing 737 with David Blaine performing magic for five hours.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Nine day journey across the United States each summer; four-day adaptive skiing adventure each winter
Kids of Courage is a volunteer centric organization that supports sick children and their families day and night and is described as an extraordinary, unique, non-profit organization that makes dreams come true for children and young adults living with serious, debilitating, painful, often life-threatening illnesses, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Since its inception in 2008, its stated mission and goal have been to empower children and young adults, most of whom would otherwise be restricted to hospitals or their homes, to have adventures and to see and experience a world of delights that would otherwise be unattainable.
The program includes a Big Brothers and Big Sisters program where volunteers become “best buddies” with ill children and ensure siblings receive extra attention, and each volunteer is carefully matched to a child’s background to help create a connection from the moment a volunteer arrives. Kids of Courage also offers medical transportation, hospital care including transportation, hot meals, games, and celebrity visits, as well as a hotline that is always available to assist parents with referrals, second opinions, insurance questions, and other areas of support. Additional activities and services include an annual marathon in Miami Beach, Florida, community weekends where Couragers are invited to spend time in communities around the country, and advocacy with senators in Washington, D.C. about restrictions on medical oxygen on commercial flights.
Kids of Courage reports that its physicians, nurses, and paramedics have logged over ten years of experience in arranging and executing very complex medical transportation, and that its medical staff is comprised of some of the most distinguished practitioners across the country. The organization states that it fights for the rights of physically and medically challenged individuals and works with theme parks and sports venues to improve conditions for wheelchair bound guests. Kids of Courage describes itself as volunteer centric and community supported, with no professional fundraisers, and notes that communities around the country open their doors for special experiences that can remove some of the mystery surrounding physical disabilities and demonstrate what it means to give of one’s self to help others.
