Forest Lake Camp Horseback Riding
Forest Lake Camp, 261 Forest Lake Road, Chestertown, NY 12817
About
Forest Lake Camp Horseback Riding offers horseback riding and riding lessons that include stable management, horse healthcare, and caring for the horses. Campers can join an overnight riding adventure where they travel by horse to designated outpost sites, tell stories around the fire, eat dinner under the stars, and sleep outdoors while the horses graze nearby. In addition to riding, campers also have the chance to swim and sail.
• Ages: 8–15 years old
• Schedule: Riders can choose two or four one-hour riding lessons per week within 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7 week programs
Horseback riding has been a popular optional activity at Forest Lake Camp since 1926, with over 50% of campers choosing to participate. Riders are assessed and placed into groups of no more than five based on ability and experience, and weekly riding reports are provided so parents can track their camper’s progress. During the final week, all riders have a chance to perform in a horse show with many ribbons to be won, and campers can help take care of the horses and learn proper horse care.
The program’s riding directors use a skills checklist that each rider is encouraged to work through, and instructors are experienced with helping nervous riders or riders who have lost their confidence. Horses are hand-picked each year from Forest Lake Camp’s longtime partner, Pond Hill Ranch. Forest Lake Camp is a brother/sister camp with separate camps and programs for boys and girls on the same property and also offers a Family Camp week at the end of summer.
Forest Lake Camp states that it offers a safe, wholesome, healthy, life-shaping experience. Since 1926, generations of campers have attended Forest Lake Camp, and the camp reports that it has enriched the lives of thousands of boys and girls and generations of families. One first-year camper described the camp as amazing, said everybody was nice, and said they had the best summer of their life, with great food and strong connections with counselors who helped with anything.
