About

Queens Zoo Education Programs include activities such as Summer Camp, sea lion feedings, feeding the animals at the petting zoo, and visits to the aviary dome. Participants can walk through the aviary and encounter its diverse avian residents as part of the program offerings.

• Schedule: Zoo opens at 10:00 AM, with sea lion feedings at 11:15 AM, 2:00 PM, and 4:00 PM, last entry at 4:00 PM, and zoo closing at 4:30 PM.

The Queens Zoo opened in 1968 on the site of the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs and was redesigned and reopened by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in 1992. The Queens Zoo features wildlife native to the Americas, including Southern pudu from Chile and Argentina, American bison from the Great Plains, and Andean bears, the only South American bear species. The farmyard includes rare breeds of domestic animals such as Flemish giant rabbits, Texas longhorn cattle, and Jacob’s four-horned sheep. The aviary is a Buckminister Fuller inspired geodesic dome that originally served as the Winston Churchill Pavilion during the 1964 World’s Fair and was later transformed into a colorful habitat. Queens Zoo has bred and released more than 4,000 Puerto Rican crested toads as part of a head-start program and has produced the last Andean bear born in North American zoos. The program follows the mission “to connect people to animals and nature, and become champions for wildlife.”

The Wildlife Conservation Society’s network of five urban wildlife parks headquartered at Bronx Zoo has inspired and educated more than 400 million guests since first opening. One parent described the zoo as “a great escape to feel like you're not in Queens” and “a great place for all age groups.” Another visitor said the zoo “is not too big but it is just right for an afternoon stroll with the kids and kids at heart” and called it a “must-see.” A third visitor highlighted “lots of fun feeding the animals at the petting zoo” and recommended a visit to the “beautiful aviary dome.”
