Dunkirk Camp & Conference Center has a long history that began in 1918, when the National Board of Sunday Schools of the Evangelical Synod of North America started searching for a site for an “Eastern Summer Leadership Training School.” In 1922 the organization acquired a 110-acre farm on the shores of Lake Erie and named it “Evangelical Conference Grounds,” later called “Dunkirk Conference Grounds” after a 1934 merger with the Reformed Church. Over the years, the property’s ownership and name changed several times, including incorporation as “Dunkirk Conference Center, Inc.” in 1989, and it is now known as Dunkirk Camp & Conference Center. The organization continues to operate as an independent entity with support from Christian friends, churches, and organizations.
The mission of Dunkirk Camp & Conference Center is to be called by God to inspire and enrich people of all ages through fellowship, learning, and fun in a welcoming Christian environment. The organization states that it seeks to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all campers, counselors, staff, volunteers, and visitors and will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status. Dunkirk Camp & Conference Center also states that it aspires to be a widely recognized year-round Christian education campus and destination, rooted in its history and focused on excellence in camp, educational, and retreat experiences. Volunteer work groups participate in keeping Dunkirk functional and maintained.
The leadership team includes Anne Wilmont as Camp Manager, Phoenix Rollek as Assistant Camp Manager, and Rick Godsey as Facility Manager. Program leadership also includes Christina Reid as Day Camp Director, Heather Johnson as Assistant Day Camp Director, and Haley Supkoski as Aquatics Director. Organizational officers and trustees include Jay Rich III (President), Jill Nowicki (Vice President), Krista Ulrich (Secretary), and trustees Jeff Ribbeck, David Hess, Bernie Deeg, Jeff Rich Jr., Mike Hanes, Missy Tolbert, Heather Kraemer, Greg Furgala, and Mari Aures.
