Beginning in 1918, the National Board of Sunday Schools of the Evangelical Synod of North America searched for a site and on March 1, 1922 acquired the 110-acre Smith farm that became the camp property. In 1932 the first informal Family Week was held, and in 1934, after a merger with the Reformed Church, the property was named “Dunkirk Conference Grounds.” In 1947 the General Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church agreed to transfer title ownership to four adjacent synods, and in 1989 it was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization named “Dunkirk Conference Center, Inc.” and known as DCC. The mission statement says the organization is called by God to inspire and enrich people of all ages through fellowship, learning, and fun in a welcoming Christian environment. DCC continues to operate as an independent organization with support from a network of Christian friends, churches, and organizations, and volunteer work groups participate in keeping Dunkirk functional and beautiful.
The leadership team includes Anne Wilmot (Camp Manager), Larry Bane (Buildings & Grounds), Rick Godsey (Facility Manager), Christina Reid (Day Camp Director), Heather Johnson (Assistant Day Camp Director), and Haley Supkoski (Aquatics Director). The board leadership includes Jay Rich III (President), Jill Nowicki (Vice President), and Krista Ulrich (Secretary), with trustees Jeff Ribbeck, David Hess, Bernie Deeg, Jeff Rich Jr., Mike Hanes, Missy Tolbert, Heather Kraemer, Greg Furgala, and Mari Aures. Dunkirk Camp and Conference Center states that it seeks to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all campers, counselors, staff, volunteers, and visitors, and it states that it will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status. Dunkirk Camp and Conference Center also states that it aspires to be a widely recognized year-round Christian Education Campus and destination.
