About
The Fresh Air Fund Camps offer sleepaway camp experiences that include learning to swim, drumming, sports, outdoor adventure, music classes, art classes, boating and kayaking. The camps also include leadership development, teamwork, mentorship, social-emotional learning (SEL) workshops, and career awareness activities. Some campers take part in school-year leadership and enrichment programs that include college tours and SAT prep courses.

The Fresh Air Fund is a youth development organization providing transformative outdoor experiences, at no cost, for New York City children from underserved communities. The organization’s history includes serving 60 children in 1877, reaching 100,000 New York City children by 1895, and celebrating 100 years of Friendly Towns in 1977 with over 1.3 million children participating by that time. Its camping and leadership programs have expanded over the years with milestones such as the opening of Camp Mariah and the Career Awareness Program in 1994, Camp Tommy in 1999, the Young Women’s Giving Circle program in 2008, the Precious Center for Teen Leadership at Camp ABC in 2010, the College Connections Program in 2012, the Blavatnik Family and Warner Music Group Center for Music at Camp Hidden Valley in 2015, and Camp Junior in 2019. In 2020, The Fresh Air Fund continued to provide experiences through virtual and outdoor programs, and in 2025, Camp Tommy became home to leadership development programs for Leaders-in-Training and Counselors-in-Training.
The Fresh Air Fund’s leadership and supporters include Julie Silverman, Director of Communications; William Lauder, Chairman of the Board; Mrs. Donald Newhouse, Chairwoman Emeritus and former Chairwoman of the Board; Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Chairman Emeritus; Mrs. Max Fisher, supporter of the Young Women’s Giving Circle program; and Sarah Siegel-Magness and Gary Magness, supporters of The Fund’s Precious Center for Teen Leadership at Camp ABC. Camp Junior was launched in partnership with New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission. The Young Women’s Giving Circle program is a youth-led program that teaches girls about the importance of community service and the power of philanthropy. The College Connections Program provides students with resources and support to apply to and graduate from college, including college tours, SAT prep courses and weekly meetings with volunteer mentors. Camp Mariah is the summer component of the year-round Career Awareness Program, Camp Tommy is home to leadership development programs for Leaders-in-Training and Counselors-in-Training, and the Blavatnik Family and Warner Music Group Center for Music at Camp Hidden Valley is a year-round program. Camp Junior is in memory of Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz, a 15-year-old victim of gang violence.
