About
The Fresh Air Fund Camps offer activities such as learning to swim, drumming, STEM, sports, outdoor adventure, music, art classes, boating and kayaking. The camps also include leadership development, teamwork, mentorship, SEL workshops, and career awareness activities. Participants can take part in school year leadership and enrichment programs, virtual programs, and outdoor programs connected to the camps.

Camp Mariah is the summer component of the year-round Career Awareness Program. Camp Tommy became home to leadership development programs for Leaders-in-Training and Counselors-in-Training in 2025. The College Connections Program provides students with resources and support to apply to and graduate from college, including college tours, SAT prep courses and weekly meetings with volunteer mentors. The Young Women’s Giving Circle is a youth-led program that teaches girls about community service and philanthropy. The Blavatnik Family and Warner Music Group Center for Music at Camp Hidden Valley is a year-round program.
The Fresh Air Fund is a youth development organization providing transformative outdoor experiences, at no cost, for New York City children from underserved communities. It states that it believes that investing in a child’s journey through life provides an opportunity for young people to learn, grow and thrive in New York City and beyond.
The Fresh Air Fund’s history includes serving 60 children in 1877 and reaching 100,000 New York City children visiting Friendly Towns by 1895. Its camping programs were centralized in 1948 after Dr. William Sharpe’s gift of woodland property in Fishkill, New York. Over 1.3 million children had participated in Friendly Towns by 1977. Camp Mariah and the Career Awareness Program opened in 1994, Camp Tommy opened in 1999, the Young Women’s Giving Circle program launched in 2008, the Precious Center for Teen Leadership at Camp ABC opened in 2010, the College Connections Program launched in 2012, and the Blavatnik Family and Warner Music Group Center for Music at Camp Hidden Valley opened in 2015. Camp Junior launched in 2019, and in 2020 The Fresh Air Fund continued programs through virtual and outdoor formats. In 2025, Camp Tommy became home to leadership development programs for Leaders-in-Training and Counselors-in-Training.
Community involvement includes launching Camp Junior in 2019 in partnership with New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission. The Young Women’s Giving Circle program teaches girls about the importance of community service and the power of philanthropy.
The organization’s leadership has included Mrs. Donald Newhouse as Chairman of the Board in 1988 and later Chairman Emeritus in 2011, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger as Chairman and later Chairman Emeritus in 1988, and William Lauder as Chairman of the Board in 2011. The leadership team also includes Julie Silverman, Director of Communications, and Kylee Siaw of Momentum Communications Group.
