The school describes itself as a school of self defense and as one of the largest training facilities on Long Island, offering martial arts training for adults and kids. Programs are available for children as young as 3 1/2 years old, and classes are arranged by ability and age with special attention to every child.
Head instructor Tom LoVarco is a 9th Degree Black Belt and the Vice President of the Worldwide Kenpo Karate Association. The mission of American Black Belt Academy is to specialize in self defense strategies through American Kenpo Karate, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Kickboxing, and to offer self defense and fitness with an award-winning children's program dedicated to the total development of students, including developing strong bodies, a healthy outlook on life, respect for adults, and a successful attitude.
In 2006, United Professionals and Black Belt Schools of America ranked American Black Belt Academy as one of the top 50 schools in the country. Each year since then, the Worldwide Kenpo Karate Association has ranked American Black Belt Academy the number one American Kenpo Karate school in the United States. The school describes itself as Long Island's #1 self defense and fitness center, as one of the top Mixed Martial Arts schools in the country, and as being known for producing some of the top martial arts students. The Lights Out Boxing fitness program is described as guaranteed to get participants into the best shape of their lives.
A testimonial from Tom Fiorentine, a physical education teacher from Grace Day School, states that he was impressed by Tom LoVarco’s ability to work with children, describing him as soft-spoken while still demanding students’ attention, and noting that more talkative students were very attentive and less coordinated students were able to move through exercises with confidence and ease, which he called a solid building block of self-esteem.
