About
Stomping Ground is a 2-week overnight summer camp where campers can choose from activities such as soccer, basketball, gaga, run club, archery, kayaking, and open waterfront time. Campers also have options like book club, creative writing, musical theatre, dance team, D&D, LARP, figure drawing, watercolor painting, hand-molding clay, friendship bracelets, and blind karaoke during free choice periods.
• Schedule: Stomping Ground runs 2-week overnight sessions, with Session 1 from June 28–July 10, Session 2 from July 12–July 24, Artsfest (teens only) from July 26–August 7, and Session 4 from August 9–August 21; a typical day includes breakfast, several free choice activity blocks, village time, open waterfront, dinner, open ballfield, and all-camp games.
• Price: 2-week session = $2750; the “true cost” reflects the full price of a session, and there is limited availability for a Trust-Based Sliding Scale that allows families to pay what they are able.
Stomping Ground describes itself as a radically empathetic summer camp that practices Restorative Justice and treats conflict as part of the curriculum, using conflict as an opportunity for connection and innovation rather than for blame and shame. The camp states two big ideas: kids learn best how to make decisions by making them, and conflict is inevitable so they plan for it. The program emphasizes humble curiosity and cultural humility through dialogue and shared experiences, assumes positive intent when people make mistakes, and intentionally brings together campers and staff with different passions, histories, and backgrounds. Stomping Ground describes camp as a playground for testing out group development and systems thinking, embodies unbounded creativity and personal responsibility in a shared living space, and considers itself expert in camper choice. The camp employs Restorative Practices, including a circle system, as a tool to resolve conflicts when they arise.
Stomping Ground states that it has never turned away a family for financial reasons and uses a Trust-Based Sliding Scale that allows families to pay what they are able for the program. The organization is an independent 501c3 tax exempt nonprofit that is not affiliated with any political parties or movements and does not directly or indirectly participate in political campaigns. Stomping Ground’s learnings are sought after by other communities, including camps and school districts looking to empower young people.
Cabin staff at Stomping Ground are hired after a series of two interviews and reference checks. The leadership team includes Daniel as camp director, with listed contacts for Daniel and Laura by phone and email. One camper parent describes the camp as offering intentional but flexible play and notes growth in maturity, empathy, empowerment, and confidence connected to the freedom and tools offered in a diverse setting.
At Stomping Ground, campers and staff eat three meals a day and have two snacks, with a kitchen team that prepares mostly from-scratch meals while taking into account all dietary needs. The camp runs a tree-nut and peanut free facility.
