Camp Nabby has been creating memories since 1940 and was started by Abraham Nabatoff, who ran the camp until 1970. The Bertino family became the second owners in 1970, and the camp was named after founder Abraham Nabatoff, with Scooter B. Nabatoff as the official mascot. The program includes a Pre-K program for children 3½ to 4½ years old, a Junior program for ages 4½ to 8½, a Senior program for ages 8½ to 13, and LIT & CIT “in-Training” programs for 14 and 15 year olds. Activities take place on fields including Nabby’s own “The Great Chase Race,” on courts in various sizes with specially scaled areas for younger campers, and in three pools (small, medium, and large) so kids at every swim level have a place to swim. Campers also use Ranger Rick’s nature center and hiking trails, the Aerial Adventure area with age-appropriate challenges, the Nabby Stage for music, the arts & crafts shack, a dining hall called “The Casino,” and bunks that serve as homerooms where kids change for swim. The mission of Camp Nabby is described as people-first, with a summer program that reflects values such as teamwork, cooperation, athletic development, and social skills. The leadership team includes Frank Bertino, who was the former owner and program designer, Florence (Flo) Bertino, their oldest son Joe who runs day-to-day operations, Joe’s wife Rita as associate director, their daughters Jeanie, Gemma, and Maddie, their son Matt, and brother-in-law Dave, and Joe has over 35 years of experience as a physical education teacher and swim coach. One parent from Somers, identified as Lisa, stated that every year the staff, activities, and themes continue to amaze their family and that their children have grown at Camp Nabby and because of Camp Nabby.
