About

Caedmon Discovery Camp offers hands-on learning through activities such as art, music, movement, theater games, science, tennis, and sports and games. Campers take age-appropriate trips and field trips to New York City attractions including the Empire State Building, Coney Island Aquarium, Bronx Zoo, and New York Hall of Science in Queens, and also take part in courtyard play, water play, swimming, and arts and crafts. The camp includes special activities and an all-camp, on-site specials event on Fridays.

• Ages: 2–12 years old
• Schedule: Field trips Monday–Thursday, with an all-camp on-site specials event on Fridays

Enriching activities at Caedmon Discovery Camp are led by experienced Caedmon teachers and talented specialist instructors, and highly skilled counselors and experienced specialists guide campers through programs. Camp groups are organized by age, with group placement determining each camper’s weekly schedule. The youngest group, Staten Island Frogs (ages 2.8–3), has full-day and half-day options, water play twice a week, and special events on Wednesdays and Fridays. Brooklyn Beavers (age 4) and Manhattan Monkeys (age 5) are full-day programs with a special activity on Wednesdays, swimming twice per week, and weekly water play in the courtyard, and the three youngest camp groups have water play 2–3 times per week. Bronx Bees (ages 6–7) are divided into Junior Bees (age 6) and Senior Bees (age 7), take two trips per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, swim twice per week, and have special activities at school. Queens Penguins (ages 8–12) are divided into Junior Penguins (ages 8–9) and Senior Penguins (ages 10–12), take three trips per week, swim once per week, and have one special trip to a water park. Campers use New York City’s museums, parks, and cultural institutions for trips, and the camp is described as an engaging Manhattan day camp and a safe and enriching NYC summer program that blends exploration with education.

The Caedmon School, which runs Caedmon Discovery Camp, was founded in 1962 as the first Montessori school in New York City. The Head of School is Dr. Wendy A. Falchuk. The school’s mission states that it honors the individual and fosters the natural curiosity of each child as the foundation of academic achievement, and that it nurtures empathy in students to value perspectives other than their own.
