About

Concrete Safaris Outdoor Education Programs include hands-on activities such as planting, weeding, raking, shoveling, cleaning up trash, gardening, and landscaping. Participants also take part in outdoor play, placemaking, photography, evaluation, health promotion, nonprofit management, and field trips in East Harlem and beyond.

• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Apr–June and Sept–Dec, two Saturdays per month, 10 AM–1 PM; additional 300–675-hour AmeriCorps service options
• Price: These events are free and open to the public.

Since 2008, Concrete Safaris has prepared youth in East Harlem and beyond to lead healthy lives and shape their environment through outdoor education, play, exploration, and community engagement. The organization runs Green Exercise Days as outdoor, educational field trips and community service experiences in its gardens, and hosts Service Saturday Garden Volunteer Sessions to grow food, beautify outdoor spaces, and be physically active. Concrete Safaris also offers the PlacemakingCorps AmeriCorps Member program with 300–675-hour service, and an Outdoor Leadership Academy internship program for 14–24-year-olds divided into several cohorts.

Daily participating children ages 7–11 are active in all cohorts, while 14–15-year-olds and 16–24-year-olds learn to specialize in particular cohorts, with 16–24-year-olds also gaining exposure to at least one additional cohort and leading activities for children, youth, and community. Cohort-based activities include nonprofit management and other skill and knowledge building, and the organization’s Theory of Change focuses on youth transforming public spaces into safer spaces where they teach the community soft and hard skills.

The leadership team includes Programs Director Christopher Hartsfield, who oversees the Outdoor Leadership Academy, AmeriCorps, and single-day events, and Founding Executive Director Mac Levine, MPH, who is dedicated to providing outdoor education opportunities by and for children, youth, and community. The mission statement is “To prepare community engagement.” Community involvement includes partnerships, past and present, with schools, government agencies, foundations, community-based organizations, and corporations explicitly listed in the organization’s materials.
