Manhattan Mandarin began in 2012 with two brothers tutoring Mandarin house-to-house in New York City and has since expanded to programs and students across the country and beyond. The organization runs Mandarin after-school programs at over 40 schools nationwide, including St. Bernard's, Chapin, Allen-Stevenson, and Buckley, and offers programs at multiple schools in Washington, D.C., Boston, Miami, New York City, New Jersey (Dwight-Englewood), and Pittsburgh. Its After School Mandarin programs operate at more than a dozen private and public schools in New York City, with classes typically for students in K–6 and often grouped into K, 1–3, and 4–6, with youngest beginners learning through games, songs, and activities and advanced learners focusing on reading, writing, and more formal conversation. The program offers flexible classes and curriculums throughout the semester, support for Mandarin teachers through classroom visits, coaching sessions, and virtual follow-ups, and the option to create a pod class if existing class times do not work. Baby and toddler Mandarin classes start from infancy, and Mahjongg classes are offered for different levels by an instructor with 25 years of teaching experience.
The leadership team includes Founder and CEO Jamie Keyte, Head of Tutoring and Manhattan Mandarin UK founder Harry Keyte, COO Michelle Tomizawa, and Manhattan Mandarin Real Estate co-founder David Cheng. Jamie Keyte founded Manhattan Mandarin in 2012, has taught over 10,000 hours of private Mandarin lessons, completed intensive Mandarin language programs in Shanghai and Beijing, ran high school educational tours in China and the United States, worked as China Project Manager for a Thomson Reuters subsidiary, and co-founded IvyGate in Beijing. Harry Keyte is a professional Mandarin tutor based in London with over 10,000 hours of private and group Mandarin tutoring experience and founded Manhattan Mandarin UK in 2022. The team includes native and non-native Mandarin-speaking teachers such as Dr. Shuang Wu, who has a doctorate in Asian Studies and experience teaching Chinese language, literature, and culture in China and the United States; Lauren Wilmore, who holds a Master’s in Teaching a Foreign Language from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies and graduated magna cum laude from Barnard College; and several native Mandarin speakers including COO Michelle Tomizawa, Christine Kaplan, Anna Li, Yijia Geng, Sophie (Shichao) Shen, and Jennifer Zhang. Sophie Shen is a certified CTCSOL Mandarin tutor with a master’s degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University and a bachelor’s degree from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and Jennifer Zhang has over ten years of professional teaching experience, has taught students from young children to Fortune 500 CEOs, and has been recognized twice by Forbes Magazine as one of the Top 100 Most Influential Chinese. Across the founders and team, there are over 25,000 hours of combined Mandarin teaching experience.
The stated goal of the After School program is to establish a solid language foundation for future learning and to instill in students a lifelong interest in Mandarin and Chinese culture. Manhattan Mandarin states that it supports a child’s journey to Mandarin fluency from infancy through adulthood and that it ensures continuity in linguistic and cultural education with its classes and teachers for school years and beyond. The organization states that it looks forward to doing everything it can to support a student’s or child’s Mandarin learning journey.
One parent from Allen-Stevenson reports that her three boys have taken Manhattan Mandarin classes for three years through their school and now through private lessons, and that their teacher engages their interest in the language, encourages them to speak and listen to tones, and teaches them songs and games, and she states that she would highly recommend the teachers at Manhattan Mandarin.
