The Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club is a registered charitable organization. Its mission is to enable all children, especially those who need the club most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens, with special concern given to those who need the club most. The club is funded partially by the Northern New York Community Foundation, the United Way of Northern New York, the St. Lawrence County Division of Youth, and private contributions, and in 2025 it plans to deepen its impact by continuing efforts to build strong partnerships within the community and with club families.
For the past 60 years, many people have worked to consistently and effectively meet the mission of the club. In 1965, Thomas P. Luckie Sr. became Program/Assistant Director of the Ogdensburg Boys Club and Director of the Belmont Courts Boys Club, and in 1968 he was named Executive Director. He led a fund drive in 1973–1974 that resulted in the current club being built on Paterson Street and becoming the Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club, and he served as Executive Director until retiring in 2005. Leadership over the years has included Executive Directors Meg McNamara, Thomas P. Luckie Sr., and Tom Luckie Jr., with Pam (Miller) Luckie and Ruth (McGillivray) Luckie described as deeply involved in the success of the club.
Testimonials describe Thomas P. Luckie Sr. as having a strong influence on many young people at the club. Rick Carlisle said, “It is hard to even put it into words how he influenced so many people. He was like a second father at the boys club. He was a mentor, a teacher and a coach. He has left a legacy which will go on for decades.” Bill Powers said, “Mr. Luckie had an immeasurable positive impact on hundreds of boys and girls in Ogdensburg. Jackie Robinson’s epitaph says a life is not important but for the impact it has on others. Mr. Luckie’s life was a gift.” Bob McGuire said, “I had all the respect in the world for him and will always remember him for this and how he led all of us to a better life,” and Pete Shea said, “Growing up in Ogdensburg there was Biddy Basketball, Kiwanis Baseball and Tom Luckie.”
