The Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club states that safety is its number one priority and that it provides a safe environment in which children can play, learn, and grow under the guidance of caring adult professionals acting as positive role models and mentors, with volunteers offering supplemental support. The club’s mission is to enable all children, especially those who need the club most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens, with special concern given to those who need the club most. The Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club is a registered 501 (C) (3) charitable organization.
The club has a long history, including leadership by Thomas P. Luckie Sr., who became Program/Assistant Director of the Ogdensburg Boys Club and Director of the Belmont Courts Boys Club in 1965, was named Executive Director in 1968, and was instrumental in a 1973–1974 fund drive that resulted in the current club being built on Paterson Street and becoming the Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club. He served as Executive Director until retiring in 2005, and for the past 60 years, the efforts of many people have focused on consistently and effectively meeting the mission of the club. The leadership team has included Executive Directors Meg McNamara, Thomas P. Luckie Sr., and Tom Luckie Jr.
The club is funded partially by the Northern New York Community Foundation, the United Way of Northern New York, the St. Lawrence County Division of Youth, along with private contributions, and in 2025 it plans to deepen its impact by continuing efforts to build strong partnerships within the community and with club families.
Parents and former members have shared testimonials about the club’s impact and leadership. Rick Carlisle said, “We have lost a legend. It is hard to even put it into words how he influenced so many people. He was like a second father at the boys club. He was a mentor, a teacher and a coach. He has left a legacy which will go on for decades.” Bill Powers said, “Mr. Luckie had an immeasurable positive impact on hundreds of boys and girls in Ogdensburg. Jackie Robinson’s epitaph says a life is not important but for the impact it has on others. Mr. Luckie’s life was a gift.” Bob McGuire said, “I had all the respect in the world for him and will always remember him for this and how he led all of us to a better life.” Another club member, Pete Shea, said, “Growing up in Ogdensburg there was Biddy Basketball, Kiwanis Baseball and Tom Luckie.”
