• Ages: 3–13 years old

The Long Island Explorium’s curriculum, exhibits, and educational approach are described as unique by design and are developed to spark inventive solutions, build confidence by embracing the “fail forward” concept, and foster teamwork through hands-on workshops and activities that pose challenges with multiple outcomes or solutions. It is recognized as Long Island’s Family Maker Space, a place for families to play, create, build, and grow together. Its STEM workshops include evidence-based writing, career awareness, and civic engagement components, and its challenge-based programs are built on New York State Science Learning Standards, New York State English Language Arts and Mathematics Learning Standards, and the National Core Arts Standards. The Explorium’s STEM enrichment programs are described as research and evidence-based and data driven, drawing largely on the theories of childhood development and education leaders such as Jean Piaget, John Dewey, and Seymour Papert, and they use constructivist learning methods to support and develop the next generation of creative thinkers and problem solvers.

The Long Island Explorium was founded in 2004 and was launched by a consortium of scientists, educators, and entrepreneurial residents seeking to provide a rich educational STEM experience to the Long Island and New York metro area community. In May of 2005, it was designated as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit and was chartered with the New York State Department of Education, and it received an Absolute Charter from the Education Department of New York in 2021. The organization is a New York State certified provider of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credits and offers state-of-the-art professional development for P–12 teachers. Its mission states that it provides cutting edge, inventive inquiry-based learning experiences for students pre-K to grade 8 and families, and its vision is to be a leader in STEM discovery, learning, and innovation that will shape the intellect, social values, and principles of future generations.

The Long Island Explorium is described as playing a vital role on Long Island as a lighthouse of enriching STEM programs that foster inventive thinking and serve as a catalyst for empowerment. Its enrichment programs are brought to underserved, under-represented communities on Long Island and beyond, with the stated goal of igniting curiosity, driving imagination, and removing barriers that perpetuate gender and minority stereotypes of who can be successful in STEM. It is described as a special place that is extremely important to the community, region, schools, and families because it touches many lives, and it has a long history of success in educating families in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

Parent testimonials describe the Long Island Explorium as having many interactive activities related to STEAM, including building, experimenting, and hands-on science, and mention that birthday parties have been held there. One parent notes that a child has enjoyed visiting for six years and still likes playing in a dry rice-filled boat. Another parent reports that children ages 7, 7, and 9 attended the Long Island Explorium Express, did not want to leave at the end, and that it was a safe hands-on museum experience where their family had the museum to themselves.
