About
Long Island Explorium Camps and Workshops include hands-on workshops and activities that pose challenges with multiple outcomes or solutions. The program offers STEM workshops and hands-on challenges that explore the engineering design process. It also offers field trips with hands-on workshops for young scientists in grades Pre-K to 6th and birthday parties with interactive activities.
• Ages: 3–12 years old
• Schedule: Open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with additional days open during February break, Spring Break, Memorial Day, Eid al-Adha, and Juneteenth
• Price: Regular admission is $6 for children and $8 for adults, with discounts and free admission options for members, children under 1, Port Jefferson Library card holders, active-duty military families, and SNAP/EBT cardholders; annual membership is available for $60
The Long Island Explorium was founded in 2004 and was designated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit and chartered with the New York State Department of Education in May 2005, later receiving an Absolute Charter from the New York State Education Department in 2021. It is recognized as Long Island’s Family Maker Space and is a New York State certified provider of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credits. Its mission is to provide cutting edge, inventive inquiry based learning experiences for students pre-K to grade 8 and families, and state-of-the-art professional development for P–12 teachers. Programs are built on New York State Science Learning Standards, New York State English Language Arts and Mathematics Learning Standards, and the National Core Arts Standards, and the STEM enrichment programs are research and evidence-based and data driven.
The curriculum, exhibits, and educational approach are developed to spark inventive solutions, build confidence by embracing the “fail forward” concept, and foster teamwork. STEM workshops include evidence-based writing, career awareness, and civic engagement components. The Long Island Explorium participates as a Blue Star Museum, offering free admission for active-duty military personnel and their family members within the same household, and as a Museums for All site, offering free admission for SNAP/EBT cardholders and family members within their household. The organization describes its role on Long Island as a lighthouse of enriching STEM programs that foster inventive thinking and as a catalyst for empowerment, and states that when it brings enrichment programs to underserved, under-represented communities on Long Island and beyond, it ignites curiosity, drives imagination, and removes barriers that perpetuate gender and minority stereotypes of who can be successful in STEM.
