Cub Scout Overnight Adventure Camp at Camp Sam Wood includes activities such as camping, fishing, and hiking. Participants may also take part in kayaking, whitewater rafting, skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and snowshoeing. Additional activities listed for the broader program offerings include an aerial adventure park, a mountain coaster, a climbing forest, gem mining, lift rides, and train rides.

Camp Sam Wood has a camp caretaker, Rick Tiede. The mission of the program’s council is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. The council runs an annual Scouting for Food drive that benefits community food pantries across its region. The council serves over 5,300 Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturers, Explorers, and more than 3,000 adult volunteers in over 300 units across Western New York and the Twin Tiers. It runs three Scout camps: Camp Gorton in the Finger Lakes, Scouthaven in Cattaraugus County, and Camp Sam Wood near Letchworth State Park. The council also offers Birchbark Expeditions high-adventure canoeing programs in Western New York, the Adirondacks, and Ontario, Canada, and sends contingents to Scouting high adventure bases such as Sea Base, the Summit, and Philmont. The council reports that it continues to rank near the top in the country in both trained leaders and youth protection-trained leaders.
