The Hochstein School Music, Dance, and Expressive Arts Programs include music, dance, music ensembles, expressive arts, and individual instruction. Students can take part in activities such as guitar (including Adult Guitar and Children's Guitar), ukulele, voice, Jazz, Drum & Songwriting, Music FUNdamentals, Mini Mozarts, Music Theory & History, the Suzuki Program, and Creativity Lab. The program also offers orchestras and wind symphonies, choral groups, chamber music and instrument ensembles, jazz combos, African Family Dance & Drumming, Afro-Caribbean, ballet, children's creative movement, hip hop, jazz, modern, musical theatre, Spanish & Flamenco, tap, music, art, and dance therapy, summer camps, and summer individual lessons.

• Schedule: School year front office hours run Monday–Thursday 9:00 am–6:00 pm, Friday 9:00 am–5:00 pm, and Saturday 9:00 am–2:00 pm, with school building hours extending into the evening on weekdays and to late afternoon on Saturdays.
The Hochstein School opened its doors in 1920 in memory of David Hochstein, and the David Hochstein Recital Competition was initiated in 1991. The school’s mission is to provide people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities with access to excellent music and dance education in a community that nurtures and encourages personal achievement. The Hochstein School is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and has hundreds of faculty members. The David Hochstein Recital Competition is open to advanced students in grades 10–12 in the nine-county region surrounding Rochester, and winners are presented in recital in Hochstein Performance Hall and recorded for future broadcast on WXXI-FM Classical 91.5; the competition is made possible by The Nasipak Family. The David Hochstein Recital Competition Winners Concert is scheduled for May 1, 2026, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and a Piano Masterclass with Alan Chow is scheduled for May 4, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm.
The program includes orchestral options such as the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra (HYSO), Hochstein Philharmonia Orchestra, Hochstein Sinfonia Strings, Hochstein Concertino Strings, HochStrings: Adult Strings Chamber Orchestra, and the Hochstein Alumni Orchestra, as well as Junior Wind Symphony and Youth Wind Symphony. Choral offerings include Hochstein Little Singers, Hochstein Youth Singers, Hochstein Singers, and Rochester Intergenerational Choir Day 2026. Chamber music options include Chamber Music Connection – Youth Program and CMC Youth Instrument Ensembles, along with Chamber Music Connection – Adult Programs and CMC Adult Instrument Ensembles. The program also offers inclusive offerings and individual and group sessions in music, art, and dance therapy.
The Live from Hochstein concert series consists of weekly free noontime performances from March 18, 2026, through May 13, 2026, with concerts from 12:10 pm to 12:50 pm, and these performances are open to the public at no charge. A Hochstein Philharmonia, Sinfonia, and Concertino Strings Spring Concert is scheduled for May 3, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, with a Philharmonia, Sinfonia, and Concertino Strings performance listed from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on the same date. Hochstein plays an active role in the Rochester community by working collaboratively with community partners, by being good neighbors, and by teaching values that foster responsible citizenship.
Alan Chow, who is involved in the Piano Masterclass, is Professor of Piano and Chair of the Piano Department at the Eastman School of Music. He has performed in recital and in concert with orchestra in nearly all 50 states, as well as throughout Asia and in Europe, and has been presented at venues including New York’s Lincoln Center and Merkin Hall, Chicago’s Symphony Center and Ravinia, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Vienna’s Mozart Haus. His competition honors include First Prize at the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, the Silver Medal and Audience Favorite Prize at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, and First Prizes in the UCLA International Piano Competition and the Palm Beach Invitational International Piano Competition. He has collaborated with the America, Pacifica, Miami, and Escher String Quartets, appears in recital in the Cheng-Chow Trio with pianists Angela Cheng and Alvin Chow, and has given master classes and served as a juror for piano competitions across North America, Europe, and Asia. He has held guest and visiting professor roles at institutions including the Central Conservatory in Beijing, the Shenyang Conservatory, Oberlin Conservatory, and the Yehudi Menuhin School in Qingdao, China, and he completed studies at the University of Maryland, the Juilliard School, and Indiana University.
