Cullman Child Development Centre, 90 W Rd, Sidney, NY 13838
About
Cullman Child Development Centre offers large and small motor activities featuring fun games and toys, on-site greenhouse and gardening activities, and cooking classes. The program also includes seminars, before and after-school care, an in-house summer program for children ages 5–8, and a summer camp program for children ages 8–12.
• Ages: 6 weeks–12 years old
• Schedule: Open Monday–Friday, 5:45am–6:00pm
Founded in 1992 as a not-for-profit organization, Cullman Child Development Centre has operated for over 32 years. The program uses a developmentally based, child-centered, teacher-directed environment with Montessori-inspired learning strategies and a unique, cognitively oriented, developmentally appropriate, success-based curriculum to prepare children for life. It includes a robust social and emotional curriculum that emphasizes resilience, self-regulation, empathy, mindfulness, peer collaboration, and conflict resolution, and it serves as a space for families to explore coping mechanisms and build emotional resilience together.
The Centre offers a farm-to-table nutrition and obesity prevention program, with a focus on sustainable practices and healthy eating, and uses its on-site greenhouse for gardening activities. Cooking classes and seminars use fresh, homegrown produce. The program has an open-door policy for parental involvement, offers family activities, and includes parent representation on the Board of Directors.
The Director’s office is located at the entrance to the Center, and the building uses an electronic door system that can only be activated with a Cullman Center-issued pass code unique to each parent. Other safety features include a heated sidewalk that melts ice and snow in winter and glass inserts in all doors to prevent door-related injuries. The staff is described as highly trained and collaborates closely with families.
Families from Broome, Chenango, Delaware, and Otsego counties use the Cullman Centre for high-quality early childhood education and affordable, flexible childcare. One parent, Megan, reports being impressed and completely satisfied with the care her child receives and recommends the Cullman Center without hesitation. Another parent, Ashley, notes that her child is excited for each day, talks about everything he has done after school, and has a new excitement for learning, and she wishes they had enrolled him sooner. A third parent, Soraya, describes her 3½-year-old’s experience in the Montessori program, noting that he brings home artwork that involves concentration and strength and stating that the school is setting the stage for him to go to kindergarten with the elements necessary to succeed.
