Sandy Hollow Day Camp has been family owned and operated since 1969 and is entering its 57th season. Educators Bill and Bunny Hughes built Sandy Hollow Day Camp in 1969, and from the camp’s beginnings in 1969 to the present, close relationships have been formed with hundreds of families and the surrounding communities. The camp is described as set in the frame of a countrified landscape and as a family-run camp, and one parent notes that visiting the camp is like stepping back into their own childhood and that the camp has been going for 30+ years. Another parent mentions that their family loves starting the day gathering around the flagpole and saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

The leadership team includes founders Benita Hughes, B.S., M.A., and William Hughes, B.S., M.S., and directors Elizabeth Hughes Barrie, B.A., and Eileen Hughes, B.F.A., M.S. Many of the personnel are certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED, and an American Red Cross certified Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor (WSI) oversees the swim program at all times.

The camp’s stated goal is to provide campers with a happy and meaningful summer, with an atmosphere that opens the doors to its mission and philosophy of safety, fun, and learning. The directors state that each child should be treated as an individual and that the development of skills and attitudes through proper instruction and participation are essential to growth, with sound physical programs and creative activities providing many enjoyable learning experiences.

Parent testimonials describe the camp as run by a wonderful caring family, with staff who are excellent, extremely kind, caring, and enthusiastic. Parents report that their children come home with smiles on their faces, excitedly sharing art projects and talking about fun activities, and one parent states that they cannot recommend Sandy Hollow Day Camp enough.
