Camps are led by patient, enthusiastic, professional staff who work with children year-round and are described as experts in creating a fun and engaging learning environment, and World Class Taekwondo has an experienced staff of professional black belt instructors. The leadership team includes Grandmaster Sun Ki Chong, founder of Master Chong’s World Class Taekwondo Centers, an 8th Degree Black Belt with over 60 years of experience, a former Korean champion, former head coach for the U.S. National Taekwondo team, and 5-time head coach for the US National TKD Team, and Master Michael Mertens, co-founder and executive director, a 7th Degree Black Belt, former national level competitor with over 40 years of Taekwondo experience, three-time New York State sparring champion, 2-time bronze medalist at the Collegiate National Taekwondo championships, captain of the Cornell University sparring team, and a graduate of the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations with a focus on Organizational Behavior.

World Class Taekwondo began in 1983 when Grandmaster Chong opened his first school in Syracuse, NY, and the first World Class Taekwondo Center in Williamsville, NY opened in 1993, with four additional locations opened over the next 15 years. Grandmaster Chong retired in the summer of 2023, marking the 30th anniversary of World Class Taekwondo in Buffalo, and the organization states that it has been teaching martial arts in Western New York for over 30 years and has been a premier martial arts school since 1993. World Class Taekwondo reports that it has trained thousands of students of all ages in Western New York and is now teaching the children and grandchildren of original students, and that over 35 former staff members have gone on to open their own independent Taekwondo schools across the United States.

According to its mission statement, Grand Master Chong’s philosophy is that Taekwondo is about self improvement as well as self defense, and instructors focus on teaching “life skills” as well as physical techniques, with an emphasis on increased focus, confidence, and determination that students can apply to all areas of their life. World Class Taekwondo describes itself as more than just a place to learn martial arts, but a community where students of all ages come together to grow, challenge themselves, and achieve their goals in a supportive and positive environment.

Parent testimonials describe the camp as having fun and engaging activities, with one parent noting that their child looks forward to the camp each year and often comes home with interesting creations. Another family reports that their children were always busy, enjoyed making new friends, and described the camp counselors as “A+.” A third testimonial states that the family was impressed by how Master Chong’s innovated during the COVID pandemic and maintained safety procedures while keeping classes fun and interesting.
