About

Bay Days Summer Camp takes place within the Long Island Maritime Museum setting, where participants encounter some of the creatures living in local waters and see how maritime and natural histories are connected. Some maintenance and restoration projects at the museum are adopted by volunteers, under staff supervision, as educational programs that are part of the broader museum environment around the camp.

The museum that hosts Bay Days Summer Camp traces its origins to December 16, 1966, when the Suffolk Marine Museum was founded to collect and preserve artifacts of Long Island’s maritime history, and it opened to the public on May 1, 1968. The institution received its absolute charter from the New York State Board of Regents in November 1983, and in 1993 its operations were privatized under the corporate identity Long Island Maritime Museum. The Long Island Maritime Museum states that it is committed to the research, preservation, and interpretation of the region’s nautical heritage and Long Island’s role in the national maritime story. The museum is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Alliance of Museums, the Council of American Maritime Museums, Long Island Museum Associations, the Museum Association of New York, the Antique and Classic Boat Society, the Association of Suffolk County Historical Societies, and NY Heritage Digital Collections. The museum also takes part in Suffolk County’s celebration of the birth of the United States.
