About

Long Island Maritime Museum Youth Programs include activities such as Story Time by the Bay, the Priscilla: Youth Sail program, Bay Days Summer Camp, America's Boating Course, Watercolor Workshops, Tai Chi Classes, and Lectures at the Museum. These programs are run as part of the museum’s broader effort to share and interpret Long Island’s nautical heritage and its role in the national maritime story. Many maintenance and restoration projects at the museum are adopted by volunteers, under staff supervision, as educational programs connected to these activities.

On December 16, 1966, a group of citizens founded what was then called the Suffolk Marine Museum, dedicated to collecting and preserving artifacts of Long Island’s maritime history, and it opened to the public on May 1, 1968. The museum received its absolute charter from the New York State Board of Regents in November 1983, and in 1993 its operations were privatized and its charter amended to change the operating name to the Long Island Maritime Museum. The museum is a member of the American Alliance of Museums, the Council of American Maritime Museums, the Long Island Museum Association, the Museum Association of New York, the Antique and Classic Boat Society, and NY Heritage Digital Collections. The museum has begun digitizing its media archives, including professional documentaries, interviews, and amateur recordings, and a full-time staff of two, six to ten part-time staff, and a volunteer force operate the museum and its programs. The museum is a participating member in Suffolk County's celebration of the birth of the nation.
