About
The University of Akron Sport Science Academy includes instructional sport sessions in baseball, softball, track and field, soccer, football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, golf, and sport conditioning. Campers take part in aquatic games and free swimming at the UA Student Recreation Center pool, guest speaker sessions in sport, health, and wellness, indoor and outdoor cooperative games with a motor skill and physical activity focus, and general health, wellness, and nutrition sessions. All camp activities and programs have a focus on developing a healthy lifestyle in a positive sport and recreational environment, and the camp uses the motto “Act Like a Champion Today” along with a Character Word of the Day.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, with drop-off beginning at 8:45 a.m.; sessions run June 22–25 and June 29–July 2 as 4-day camps
• Price: Youth Sport Camp (ages 5–12): June 22–25, $225; June 29–July 2, $225. Junior Counselor Leadership-in-Training Program (ages 13–14): June 22–25, $140; June 29–July 2, $140. Junior Counselor Leadership Program (ages 15–18): June 22–25, $140; June 29–July 2, $140.
The Youth Sport Camp is designed to teach sport skill development in youth ages 5–12, with cooperative teachers and coaches providing a positive learning environment and small group instruction. Participants are provided with feedback that encourages individual sport skill development and includes learning basic sport skills and rules along with other lifetime physical activities, and the program describes the experience as “Physical Education all day.” The Junior Counselor Leadership Program is designed for youth ages 15–18 who are interested in learning about leadership fundamentals while working with children in the sport and recreation environment, and Junior Counselors are expected to take part in planning and implementing weekly activities, as well as weekly Sport Science Academy service, supervision, and leadership activities. The Junior Counselor Leadership-in-Training Program is offered for ages 13–14. Before and after care are available for an additional fee, and no lunch is included, so campers need to pack their own lunch.
