Camp Joy offers experiential programs at a 317 acre site that includes a swimming pool, the P&G Learning Center, and a Recreation Center. The P&G Learning Center serves as an indoor program space and the home for administration, and the Recreation Center houses youth programming year-round, particularly in inclement weather. Camp Joy’s mission is “Helping people grow and succeed through life-long experience based learning.”
Camp Joy was founded in 1937 by the St. Barnabus Episcopal Church and has been operating for more than 80 years. In 1948, Camp Joy embraced racial integration of its summer camp, and in 1952 it began co-ed camping. In 1972, Camp Joy began year-round outdoor education programming that eventually evolved into the Outdoor School Program. In 1984, Camp Joy introduced the region to adventure programming for youth and adults, and the adult portion of this programming received the trade name Ventured Out! and helps support the organization. Camp Joy dedicated its swimming pool in 1997, the P&G Learning Center opened in 1998, and a new Recreation Center opened in 2005. In 2006, Camp Joy launched the “Building for Inclusion” Initiative to fund projects across the campus to better serve those with special, medical, and physical disability needs. In 2012, Camp Joy launched its 75th Anniversary Campaign to celebrate its anniversary and raise capacity-building funding. Today, Camp Joy serves more than 13,000 guests annually through its experiential programs.
