About
Ohio Leadership Institute Programs include leadership skills and leadership activities, along with the Ohio Model United Nations weekend simulation. In the Ohio Model United Nations program, students take part in a three-day simulation of the United Nations and assume the roles of ambassadors from other nations. The organization also offers the OMUN Advisor’s Training Workshop, Quality Professional Development Workshops, and leadership consulting for schools.
• Ages: 10–18 years old
• Schedule: Ohio Model United Nations is offered as a weekend, three-day simulation of the United Nations.
Ohio Leadership Institute, Inc. was established as a non-profit organization in 1992. Two separate programs were established in 1982 for students in grades 6–8, and these programs were originally established during the 1981–1982 school year. In 2019 the summer camps were transformed into the Ohio Leadership Training Conference for students in grades 7–12. During the 2018–2019 school year, the OMUN program was attended by over 3000 students.
Ohio Leadership Training Conference (OhioLTC) is described as Ohio’s largest summer residential leadership program for students in grades 7–12. The OMUN program is described as Ohio’s largest global education program for students in grades 5–12. The programs include summer residential leadership programs and an International Outreach Program for Education in Nigeria (I-OPEN). OMUN delegates donated $4000 toward the establishment of I-OPEN during the 2006–2007 school years.
Both programs were founded by John E. Lester, and Ohio Leadership Institute’s Associate Director is Lowell Miller. John E. Lester is an educator with degrees in comprehensive social studies, gifted education, and school administration. Schools across the state of Ohio are currently raising funds to support the I-OPEN program, and Ohio Leadership Institute worked with AYPAD (African Youth Platform for Development) in Nigeria to establish an educational outreach project.
