Kno Ho Co Ashland CAC Head Start is a federally funded preschool program specifically for low income children ages 3 to 5. The program is part of the national Head Start system, which promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through educational, health, nutritional, social, and other services to enrolled children and families. Children with disabilities are welcome in the program and may receive special services or therapies while attending. Kno Ho Co Ashland CAC currently operates both half day and full day Head Start options at six locations, and children attend either half a day or a full day. Some Head Start centers in this system provide transportation by Licensed Ohio School Bus. Meals provided to all children meet two-thirds of their daily food allowance, and all foods are USDA approved. Mental Health consultants are available for staff, parents, and children, and there are at least two classroom observations per year with follow-up staff meetings. Applications for low income children to attend Head Start are available starting in March of each year for the following fall. The majority of children served are from families with incomes at or below 130% of the Federal Poverty Level, and about ten percent of the children served may be above income and are selected based on need. Populations served include children ages 3–5 from low-income families in Holmes and Ashland Counties. Head Start centers in this program are required to meet all State and local licensing regulations, and the centers participate in the State of Ohio’s Step Up to Quality rating system.
Head Start teachers in this program have a degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field, and some hold State of Ohio Teaching licenses. Assistant teachers must have at least a CDA certificate, and many have taken college-level classes in Early Childhood Education. Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland CAC has been providing services to local communities for over 55 years. Its mission is to identify and assist in the resolution of poverty related issues. The Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland Community Action Commission partners and collaborates with clients and client groups, elected officials, local leaders, individuals, groups, and agencies in their communities. The KHCA Board of Directors is made up of local public officials, representatives of local business or industry, and low-income citizens or their representatives.
