About

Girl Scouts of Western Ohio Camps – Camp Whip Poor Will offers camp sessions where girls can choose their own adventures within a variety of program areas. Campers stay and gather in different facilities across more than 500 acres that include woods, creeks, and trails, using spaces such as cabins, platform tent units, and a large dining hall or lodge. Families can communicate with campers through mailed letters and a one-way email system that follows specific delivery times and formatting rules.

• Schedule: Emails are printed daily between 11 and 11:30 a.m. and delivered at lunchtime Monday–Thursday, and mail is delivered during “Me Time” every day; any email or mail received after 11:30 a.m. is delivered the following day.
• Price: Mary Rollins Dining Hall costs $50 per 4 hours, plus $10 per hour for each additional consecutive hour; other units list pricing as “See Checkfront for pricing.”

Camp Whip Poor Will includes several distinct facilities. Cookie House has dormitory-style sleeping in a large room with two small rear rooms, bunk beds and mattresses, heat and air conditioning, a small bathroom with a flush toilet and shower, an outdoor latrine, a kitchen with a stove and refrigerator, an indoor fireplace, an outdoor fire circle, and a capacity of 20. Evergreen is divided into Evergreen Spruce and Evergreen Pine, each side sleeping 24, with bunk beds and mattresses, bathrooms and showers, full heating and air conditioning, an open porch, four folding walls, a shared kitchen with two stoves and two refrigerators and equipment for two troops, two indoor fireplaces, and two outside fire circles, with each side reserved separately. Towhee is a year-round building with two sleeping rooms, a kitchen, a large meeting room area, heat or air conditioning, an outside fire pit, and a capacity of 12. Mary Rollins Dining Hall/Lodge is a winterized facility for large group events up to 200 people, with a kitchen that includes a convection oven, gas range and oven, dishwasher, walk-in freezer and refrigerator, cooking and serving dishes, plates, bowls, silverware, glasses, and air conditioning in the kitchen; the kitchen is reserved separately from the lodge. Fernwood is an enclosed three-season cabin on the north side of camp with built-in triple-decker bunk beds, electricity, a refrigerator, an electric stove, a fire circle, a latrine, a security light, an oasis, no interior water source, and a capacity of 16. Knoll is a platform tent unit near the center of camp with seven tents that sleep four each, beds and mattresses in the tents, a screened-in kitchen shelter, electricity, a refrigerator, a latrine, a security light, an oasis, and a capacity of 28, and it is next to a swinging bridge that connects to the Aspen Unit. Sassafras is a small platform tent unit between the pool and Cookie House, with four tents that sleep four each, beds and mattresses in the tents, a screened-in kitchen shelter, electricity, a refrigerator, a latrine, a security light, an oasis, and a capacity of 16.

Parents are asked not to send food to campers because it attracts bugs and other critters, and any food that arrives is kept in the kitchen until departure. Parents are strongly encouraged to pre-write letters and leave them in a designated mailbox area on check-in day, and mailed letters should be marked with the camper’s name, session, and day to be delivered. Emails to campers use a one-way system, must have the subject line formatted as CAMPER NAME/SESSION NAME, are printed between 11 and 11:30 a.m., and are only delivered Monday–Thursday, not on Fridays. Campers who spend multiple days away from camp on off-site overnights do not receive emails or postmarked mail until they return. Campers do not have access to the phone, and there are no scheduled visitation days during the week because visits are described as exceptionally disruptive for all campers.

Camp Whip Poor Will is accredited by the American Camp Association for its high standards in both facilities and programs. The camp is available for troops, service units, and other Girl Scout groups to reconnect with the outdoors.
