About

PCYC Learn-to-Sail introduces young sailors to boat handling, seamanship, safety, sportsmanship, and building friendships through classroom instruction, games, and time on the water sailing. Participants practice water safety skills, rigging and de-rigging boats, nautical terminology, boat handling skills, sail trim, skippering, and learning the rules of sailing. The program includes options for both recreational learning and a Race Team for more advanced and competitive participants.

• Ages: 5–17 years old
• Schedule: One-week Intro to Sailing class, 3-week sessions for beginner and intermediate sailors, and a full summer session Race Team option

The mission of the PCYC Learn-to-Sail program is to teach young people the basics of boat handling, seamanship, safety, sportsmanship, and building friendships, and it strives to develop competence and confidence in sailors in a safe and fun learning environment. The program uses a single-sailor Optimist Dinghy for sailors weighing 50–110 lbs in an Opti class designed for ages 5–13, and Club 420 sailboats for intermediate sailors in classes designed for ages 10–17, using a larger, two-sailor boat that is also a common platform for high school and collegiate sailing. The program has club-owned boats and also accepts students with privately owned boats. The summer staff is comprised of experienced US SAILING certified instructors and several junior assistants, and all instructors are US SAILING Level 1, CPR, and First Aid certified. The vision for the club that runs this program started over 110 years ago, and the Port Clinton Yacht Club describes itself as a family club with a rich social and yachting history and as the “Greatest Club on the Great Lakes.”
