Champions provides flexibility to extend the learning day before and after school for school-age children ages 5 to 12 years. The program includes wellness screening located near the Family Communication Area and uses strict pick-up and drop-off procedures, including sign-in and sign-out on a paper-based roster and/or computer system. Only authorized staff and families may enter sites, and only pre-approved people with photo identification may pick up a child, with written authorization required before a child is released to anyone. Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers are present at all sites, and each site has an emergency evacuation plan that is tested frequently, supported by a National Support Center crisis team during and after emergencies.
Teachers and staff undergo extensive training on health and safety practices, including pandemic-response protocols, and are trained in first aid and CPR. Teachers and staff members are trained in child development, early childhood education, or a related field, and criminal background checks are conducted for staff. Cleaning is done with safe, non-toxic cleaning products, and frequent hand washing is part of the program. Most sites offer breakfast, lunch, and snacks, and where meal service is provided, menus satisfy applicable federal and state nutrition guidelines. Families are asked to refrain from posting photos or videos that contain images of children other than their own on the Internet. Champions states that it has a solution for busy working families that combines activities with fun and learning, together with the safety and convenience of a high-quality program right inside the school.
