CSA-approved hockey helmets are strongly recommended for most programs, and ice skates are required for all participants while on the ice. CSA-approved helmets are recommended for Fun Skate and Adult and Older Adult Skate, and approved skating aids are allowed for these two activities. For Adult Skate Fit, participants must be able to skate forwards and backwards and turn with speed. For Hockey Shinny (Pick-Up Hockey), there are no equipment rentals, full hockey equipment and a CSA-approved helmet are mandatory, facial protection or a cage is required for some age groups, and goalies must bring full equipment; goalies play free and must check in with customer service. For Hockey Stick & Puck, a CSA-approved helmet is mandatory, full equipment is required for some age groups, and there is a maximum of three children per adult. Recommended skates are leather hockey skates or figure skates with laces, and plastic skates or models with straps, buckles, or adjustable sizing are not recommended. For all lesson-based skating programs (Ice Skating ages 3 to 5 with adult, Ice Skating ages 4 to 5, Junior ages 6 to 12, Intermediate ages 7 to 18, Ice Skating ages 13 to 17, Adults ages 18+, Ice Skating Adapted ages 6 to 12, and Ice Skating Adapted ages 13+), a CSA-approved hockey helmet or figure skating helmet is mandatory and participants must bring their own skates. For Ice Skating (ages 3 to 5 with adult), both the child and the adult must wear a CSA-approved hockey or figure skating helmet along with skates. Participants are advised to dress for a cold arena with items such as mittens, long pants, long sleeves, and a coat. New skates must be sharpened before being used on the ice, and it is recommended that skates be resharpened at the beginning of each new skating session.

For Ice Skating (ages 4 to 5), skaters are not evaluated, and this is a participation program where they receive a participation button at the end. The Junior program (ages 6 to 12) consists of eight levels and is appropriate for both beginners and children who want to improve their skating. Skating report cards differ significantly from other city programming report cards such as swimming, and preschool and adult skating classes do not issue report cards. The program notes that participants can develop skills and use a variety of drop-in programs that are designed to fit different schedules.
