For over 30 years, Science North Summer Camps have delivered hands-on summer science camp experiences across Ontario, reaching more than 25,000 campers. Programs include STEM-based day camps for ages 4–11 and leadership camps for youth ages 12–16, and camp themes and age groups vary by location, with camps for older youth available only in select communities. From nature-themed camps and animal adventures to technology-based programming, the camps include options that appeal to science-focused interests, and extended hours are available in specific communities.

Science North’s trained staff have educational backgrounds that can include teachers, science graduates, and post-secondary students in areas such as speech pathology and physics, and all staff must have a current police check for the vulnerable sector. On the first day, parents or guardians are asked to inform staff of any special medical concerns, provide updated emergency contact information, and bring photo ID when picking up their child, with proof of age possibly required so that participants match the required age for the program.

Science North states that its approach to camps supports consistent, high-quality camp experiences and aligns with its mission of providing science learning across Northern Ontario. The organization notes that its science camps offer children the chance to get hands-on with real tools, engage in modern science, and socialize and have fun with friends, and that engaging activities and workshops are used to spark natural curiosity and inspire a love for science.

Science North is an agency of the Government of Ontario and a registered charitable organization, and IMAX is identified as a registered trademark of IMAX Corporation. Science North is described as Northern Ontario’s most popular tourist destination, Dynamic Earth is identified as the home of the Big Nickel, and IMAX with Laser is described as Northern Ontario’s only giant screen.

Science North notes that its programs include STEM-based day camps and leadership camps offered in Sudbury, Thunder Bay, and Sault Ste. Marie, and that camps for older youth are only available in select communities. The organization states that it is grateful to work with First Nations across Northern Ontario, gives thanks to the Indigenous Peoples who have cared for the land since time immemorial, and commits to deepening engagement, relationships, and partnerships to advance truth and reconciliation, honour and reflect Indigenous ways of knowing, grow economic opportunities, and collaborate with Indigenous peoples as partners.

Parent and visitor testimonials describe Science North and Dynamic Earth as having many hands-on activities and exhibits, films, and an underground mine tour, with comments noting that there is “so much to do,” that visits can last many hours, and that families return multiple times over many years. One visitor describes Science North as “probably the best science museum on the planet” and comments on the quality of programming, while others highlight the Big Nickel, outdoor play areas, and experiences that appeal to “rock nerds.”
