United for Literacy, formerly known as Frontier College, is a national charitable literacy organization. The organization offers workplace literacy and essential skills programs for adults, learning support for adults with developmental disabilities, and small group tutoring and conversation circles for newcomers. Programs are available both in person (where offered) and online, are practical and goal oriented, and are tailored to people of different ages and life stages. United for Literacy follows the Student-Centered Individualized Learning (SCIL) philosophy, and educators consider the programs to be best-in-class examples of Student-Centred Individualized Learning principles. Literacy activities, programs, and services are inclusive of any individual for whom assistance is welcome and needed, and United for Literacy is committed to promoting Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (JEDI). The organization works with volunteers and community partners across urban, rural, and remote locations in Canada and works with community partners to determine what is most needed in each region. The President and CEO is Mélanie Valcin. A volunteer tutor states, “I take pride in knowing that I am helping someone gain valuable reading skills and a new perspective on the possibilities for their lives.”
