Haven’s Urban Movement Summer Camps are led by owner and director Haven Barrett, who began dancing at age six at Albany Dance Academy under Lori Debord and has trained extensively in Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Modern and Hip-Hop. Her background includes four years on the West Albany Hi-Steppers Dance Team, serving as captain, being named a 2014 All-State Dancer, assisting at Thunderbird Dance Camp in 2014 and making the All-Star Team, and choreographing multiple routines for the West Albany High School Dance Team, where she is Head Coach/Choreographer. The studio, established in July 2018, states a mission of creating an innovative, urban feel in a positive environment, using innovative choreography and teaching to inspire dancers to be confident with a positive attitude and prepare them for all avenues within the dance world, and notes that all dancers are welcome at HUM. The program describes itself as a pre-professional, industry-style training studio for passionate dancers of all ages, offers 3-day summer camps that include an Urban Movement Camp t-shirt for the Urban Movement Dance Camp and Urban Movement Intensive, and runs an Urban Stars class for dancers with special needs or disabilities ages 10 and up, with the motto “work hard and stay HUMble.” Dancers from the studio attend conventions, competitions and local exhibitions, and Haven has choreographed for West Albany’s 2018 spring musical, the WAHS competitive a cappella group Rhythmix, the Albany Gems Middle School Dance Team, and City Dance Theatre students whose choreography was showcased in Disneyland. The studio’s listed awards include the 2024 KRKT Listeners Choice Award, the 2023 “Best Dance School in Albany” Best of Albany Award, and the 2022 “Regional Grand Champion Studio” from West Coast Elite. For camp days, families are asked to send dancers with water, a healthy snack or lunch, and dance shoes such as ballet slippers, jazz shoes, half soles or clean tennis shoes, and dancers are asked to wear non-restrictive clothing such as dancewear or athleticwear (tank tops or t-shirts, leggings, shorts, leotards, tights) with hair pulled back and out of the face.
