About
Rogue Valley Farm to School offers hands-on farm and garden programs that teach children about the food system. The program includes activities such as Farm Field Trips and Farm to Cafeteria, and it also runs an Education Hub and a Procurement Hub. Communications, outreach, and volunteer coordination are part of the program’s ongoing work.
Rogue Valley Farm to School educates children about the food system through hands-on farm and garden programs and by increasing local foods in school meals. The organization states that it inspires an appreciation of local agriculture that improves the economy and environment of the community and the health of its members. Rogue Valley Farm to School is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2024.
The program serves as southern Oregon’s Regional Hub for Education and Procurement under the leadership of the Oregon Farm to School and School Garden Network, working with regional leaders on best practices in the farm to school movement, policy and funding initiatives, and annual gatherings. It partners with Phoenix-Talent School District and Central Point schools through the Digging Deeper School Partnership, and it has partnered with La Clinica school-based health centers to better incorporate trauma-informed nutrition practices in the schools they serve. Over 30 producers, educators, and school nutrition staff members gathered at the historic Butte Creek Mill for the 2024 Procurement Gathering to learn about the Rogue Valley Heritage Grain Project and how to support locally grown grains entering schools and family kitchens. In the 2023 Squash-a-thon, the program processed 400 pounds of delicata and blue hubbard squash from Feral Farm.
The leadership team includes Co-Executive Director of Programs & Staff Rebecca Slosberg, Co-Executive Director of Operations & Development Kristin Pew, Education Program Manager Ellie Thompson, Procurement & Nutrition Manager bella grubb, and Communications & Volunteer Lead and Garden Educator Taylor Solorzano-Madden.
