Mariposas Nature Preschool was founded by educator Mercedes Rumack, who guides the program and has spent the past four years working daily with young children while developing the approach that guides the school today. The Mariposas Curriculum is a nature-inspired approach that guides learning through the seasons, with daily outdoor experiences, seasonal observation, a gentle daily rhythm, and a small mixed-age community in a small group mixed-age class size. The program offers art therapy programs for children in underserved communities and offers information sessions and school-day tours. The mission of Mariposas Nature Preschool is to offer a nurturing early childhood program where children can grow through exploration, creativity, and connection with the natural world, with a goal of nurturing children who feel confident in themselves, curious about the world, and capable of caring for the community and environment around them, with nature described as a living teacher and an emphasis on whole-child development including social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth.

Parents in the community describe Mariposas Preschool as a wonderful addition to Brookings and refer to it as a magical place that honors the spark in each child and cultivates a sense of community with like-minded parents. In their testimonials, parents note the warm and nurturing tutelage of Teacher Mercedes, the inviting atmosphere, the nature-based themes and activities, and the gentle daily rhythm of problem solving, art, music, and movement, with children spending time both inside the classroom and outside in all weather. Parents also report that their children look forward to every lesson, feel free to be themselves, and are engaged and excited by the learning experiences, and they express gratitude for the presence of Mariposas Preschool in the community.
