The State Basketball Championship works to provide certified high school officials for all games. The leadership team includes Founder Bill Reinking of the National Middle School Basketball Association, along with tournament directors and staff Bradley Laubacher, Andy Siverly, Chase Gardiner, Pauline Kibathi, Coby Grumbach, Markel Leonard, Alex Keil, and Devre Newby. In 2012, Bill Reinking founded the National Middle School Basketball Association (NMSBA), and the resulting State Basketball Championships have since taken root as annual, season-ending events in states across the USA. The mission of the NMSBA is to produce state-wide competition for the best youth basketball teams per state.

Qualifier-based tournaments determine which teams earn their spot at State by placing 1st or 2nd in an official Qualifier Tournament or League. The event offers School Gold and School Silver level competition for boys and girls in grades 4–8, with divisions for Club and School teams and Gold and Silver brackets when size allows. Awards are given to teams and coaches for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places at both levels. Game results are immediately posted to the website after completion. Teams play other school-based teams they have not faced before from many parts of Oregon, including the Portland area, Willamette Valley, Southern Oregon, Brookings, Hermiston, Pendleton, and Central Oregon. Partner hotels and resorts offer discounted rates, and scoreboard operators and scorebook keepers are pre-determined so coaches do not need to use parent volunteers. An Eligibility Committee pre-approves all team rosters. State Reps attend Qualifier Events to award top teams with their golden ticket to State. State Basketball Championship is powered by SportsEngine's Sports Relationship Management (SRM) software and uses text messaging customer care with opt-in/opt-out and no sharing of mobile opt-in information with third parties. Baden is the Official Ball of all 2025 State Basketball Championships events.

State Basketball Championship partners with independently run or pre-existing tournaments and leagues in each state for qualifier tournaments, including ICBA in Pennsylvania, CNR Basketball and Agape Hoops in Missouri, CYBN in Illinois, HoopSource Basketball in Oregon and Washington, Mid America Youth Basketball in Kansas, Eastside Travel League and WESCO Hoops League in Washington, and hundreds of local high school fundraiser tournaments each winter. Its qualifier model serves to promote 500 community-based sports organizations nationwide.

One coach from Aurora Central 8th grade boys described the event as a tournament they really enjoyed and mentioned younger teams being influenced by watching their brothers at the State Tournament. Another coach from Thomas Jefferson 5th Grade Girls thanked the organizers for an organized tournament with extremely nice facilities and said their girls had a blast and looked forward to returning for a second year.
