Coquille Martial Arts is family owned and operated by Jim and Karen Saxton, who are in their 17th year of teaching and 22nd year of practicing martial arts. Jim and Karen Saxton each hold the rank of fifth degree black belt in Jidokwan Taekwondo, conferred by Grandmaster Suggs in 2016, who is 8th dan Kukkiwon and 9th dan Jidokwan, and they are also 4th dan Kukkiwon with credentials allowing them to confer certification from Kukkiwon in South Korea. They are members of the United Hapkido Federation since 2014, teach Tai Chi, and are certified to teach the CDC Tai Chi for Better Balance course. Additional staff include Dane Saxton, a third degree black belt who teaches classes at the Coos Bay location on Market St., and Nikki Keller, a second degree black belt who teaches kids’ classes and assists with adults’ classes.

The facility is fully insured and bonded, with matted floors and a variety of floor surfaces, full dressing room facilities, and clean, comfortable waiting areas with Wi‑Fi access. The program has a “No Contracts~~ No Gimmicks” policy, offers classes in Coos Bay, Bandon, and Coquille, and a bus drops children off at the Coquille Downtown Studio Building, where students may also take art, dance, or music without leaving the building. Families can train together in family classes, and students are asked to refrain from applying scented products and perfumes for the health of instructors and fellow students.

Coquille Martial Arts is accredited by Kukkiwon American Jidokwan Taekwondo Federation and is affiliated with the United Hapkido Federation, and it is certified to teach the CDC Tai Chi for Better Balance course. Its mission statement is to promote the martial arts in the best manner possible to the community of Coquille, Coos County, Oregon, the West Coast, and beyond; to show respect and honor to instructors by promoting the art through honor and respect; to find the value in all martial arts and unite them in one harmonious community; and to make the martial arts “family” a cornerstone of that community.

Owners Jim and Karen Saxton have devoted their time to Coos County youth since 1992, including helping build 4‑H attendance in the Coos County Fair small animal barn, hosting 4‑H meetings, and partnering with The Downtown Studio, A Hopeful Tomorrow, and Operation Coquille (501(c) organizations) to provide martial arts scholarships to at-risk and disadvantaged children. The program notes that, with two locations in Downtown Coquille and the Bandon Shopping Center, there is no need to drive to Coos Bay or Brookings for quality martial arts, and states that when someone joins Coquille Martial Arts, they have the respect and support of the Coos and Lane Counties and the Oregon State martial arts community behind them.
