Ascension School Summer Camp is part of Ascension School, which has had a summer camp program in place for nearly 100 years. The program’s mission states that Ascension School is “A Place Apart to connect with God’s sacred mystery, celebrating the dignity, diversity, and oneness of all creation,” with core values of human dignity, creation care, and spiritual formation, and it welcomes and affirms people across a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and identities. Ascension School is the Spiritual Center of the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Oregon, and the Diocesan Office and Archives are located onsite at Ascension School.

The camp leadership team includes Megan Cox as Program Director, Nathan (contactable at [email protected]), and Lisa Boquist as a contact for the Diocese. Ascension School rests on the ancestral lands of the Umatilla, Cayuse, Walla Walla, and Nez Perce peoples, and habitat restoration and Indigenous cultural revitalization are stated as central to its mission. Ascension Chapel, built in 1875, is placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Facilities available at Ascension School include Kimsey Commons, Coe-Kerr Building, Founders Hall, dorms, RV and tent spaces, and the Chapel. Kimsey Commons has 11 rooms and can sleep up to 24 individuals, and bunk-style dorm lodging can host up to 80 individuals across four cabins. There are 6 RV spaces available, and tent camping is available throughout the campus with access to dorm restrooms. The Coe-Kerr Building has a robust audio and visual system, a stage, access to tables and chairs, ADA accessibility, and a catering kitchen. Founders Hall has a deck overlooking the western valley, a meeting room with audio and visual capabilities, a large dining hall, and is ADA accessible. For meals, the organization states that it will work with guests on menu options and dietary restrictions or intolerances.

Ascension School partners with the Cove Community Association on events and programs, including hosting and sponsoring the Cove Cherry Fair, known as “The Best Little Fest,” which occurs on the third Saturday of August. It partners with Naknuwithlama Tiiachamna – Caretakers of the Land on habitat restoration efforts. It also partners with Cove Senior Citizens for Senior Meals at Founders Hall and Senior Fitness at the Coe-Kerr Building, and welcomes local students from Cove School District for a drone program, science education, cross country meets and practices, and a variety of events. The Cove Preschool is located on the Ascension grounds and serves Cove’s 3–5 year olds. The K.I.D.S. Program (Kids Inspired Do Succeed), an outreach ministry of Trinity Episcopal Church in Bend, Oregon, provides funds so underserved and at-risk youth in Central Oregon can participate in activities, partnering with organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon, Bend Recovery Home, and Central Oregon Partnerships for Youth.

A packing list, transportation schedule, and camp start and end times are available from the camp. Camper and parent comments include statements such as “My favorite part was hiking and bunkbeds” (Ace, Combined Camper), “Thank you for the pool. I had lots and lots of fun!” (Kyden, Beginner’s Camper), and “The best week of the summer!!” (Jani, Support Staff Volunteer). One parent and chaplain volunteer, Simon, says, “I think what Ascension School provides is a safe and welcoming space, a place to just be without judgment,” and Jan & Lori describe Ascension School Camp as “the highlight of our kids’ summer” and note that staff sent them a photo of their first-year camper “having a blast playing with fellow campers.”
