Ascension School Summer Camp is part of a summer camp program that has been in place for nearly 100 years. The program is led by a team that includes Megan Cox, Program Director, along with Nathan and Diocese contact Lisa Boquist. Ascension School is the Spiritual Center of the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Oregon, and the Diocesan Office and Archives are located onsite. Its mission states that Ascension School is “A Place Apart to connect with God’s sacred mystery, celebrating the dignity, diversity, and oneness of all creation,” with core values of human dignity, creation care, and spiritual formation, and it explicitly welcomes and affirms people across a wide range of identities and backgrounds.

Ascension School rests on the ancestral lands of the Umatilla, Cayuse, Walla Walla, and Nez Perce peoples, and states that habitat restoration and Indigenous cultural revitalization is central to its mission. The camp partners with Naknuwithlama Tiiachamna – Caretakers of the Land on habitat restoration efforts and works with the Cove Community Association on events and programs, including hosting and sponsoring the Cove Cherry Fair, which is described as “The Best Little Fest” and always occurs on the third Saturday of August. Ascension School also partners with Cove Senior Citizens for Senior Meals at Founders Hall and Senior Fitness at the Coe-Kerr Building, and it welcomes local students from Cove School District for a drone program, science education, cross country meets and practices, and other events. A packing list for campers is provided.

Parent and camper comments describe favorite parts of camp such as hiking, bunk beds, swimming in the pool, the food, and making friends, and several former campers and parents describe the camp as an important part of their summers and family stories. One parent notes that camp staff quickly engaged a hesitant first-time camper and later sent a photo showing the child playing with other campers.
