About

The Youth Employment Program is described as one of Elkton Community Education Center’s most impactful and cherished initiatives. Each summer, local youth in the program gain practical skills, earn their own income, and receive mentorship while working at the center. Since 2015, 130 Youth Employment Program students have participated, and youth wages last summer totaled $62,540. Participants are part of a broader setting that includes activities such as learning the life-cycle of a butterfly, taking a stroll through the native plant park, signing up for an art class, browsing the plant nursery, borrowing a book, and enjoying guided tours, local crafts, and the seasonal café.

• Schedule: Each summer

The Youth Employment Program takes place within Elkton Community Education Center, which began when longtime Elkton resident and retired teacher Carol Beckley purchased a small sheep field in 1999 and invited neighbors to imagine what it could become. The center’s mission is to create a social, cultural and educational oasis for all ages in rural Oregon. The Youth Employment Program is described as award-winning. ECEC serves the town of Elkton and the surrounding communities of North Douglas County, with volunteers and a small staff caring for the grounds year-round, and it has hosted activities such as a flint knapping workshop with an educator from the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. The Outpost Mobile Food Pantry continues to come to the site twice a month, and the center reports 115 volunteers and more than 4,600 annual visitors.
