Astoria Visual Arts was founded in 1989. Starting in 2022–2023, Astoria Visual Arts partnered with the nonprofit Art Room to host the first Art Camps, and in 2024 Astoria Visual Arts began managing Art Room. Art Camps are led by Art Room staff, including experienced artists and educators. Astoria Visual Arts states that keeping camp affordable and accessible is at the heart of its mission and that every child deserves art as part of early education. Astoria Visual Arts is a nonprofit arts hub that describes itself as creating opportunities for people of all ages and walks of life to engage with the arts and as a cornerstone of creative expression and community connection, with dynamic exhibitions, youth-focused initiatives, and support for artists at every stage of their careers. Astoria Visual Arts is a 501(c)(3) public benefit charity and a qualified Oregon Cultural Trust organization.
Astoria Visual Arts partners with Art Room to host three weeks of Art Camp in the summer for children ages 5–12 and also offers Art Room After School, which provides weekly art workshops throughout the academic school year for Clatsop County youth ages 5–13. One of the camp options is Art Camp #2: Scraps to Sculpture. Thirty-seven businesses sponsored Art Camps in one year, enabling scholarships for kids who would otherwise not be able to attend, and generous local individuals and business sponsors make it possible for over 60 children to attend Art Camp each year at no cost. Sponsors have their logo or name printed on camp t-shirts and on promotional materials. Astoria Visual Arts notes that it cannot run these programs without community support and grant funding and that it partners with Recology Western Oregon for the annual Coastal Oregon Artist Residency. The organization also states that it respectfully acknowledges and honors all indigenous communities—past, present, and future—and expresses gratitude for their ongoing presence. The program notes that the 2025 sessions are full.
