The Rogue Valley Family YMCA has been running summer camp programs since the summer of 1948. Over the years, camp programs have taken campers out of the city and into nature, with locations from the coast to the mountains and both north and south of the Rogue Valley, including Camp Diamond Lake, Camp McLoughlin, Camp Apserkaha, and Camp Latgawa. Each summer they have hosted many overnight camp experiences that went beyond those specific camp locations.
Camp options include Day Camp, Resident Camp, Camp Somewhere programs, and Outdoor School (Day and Overnight). Day camp programs are offered at local elementary schools and include trips to the outdoors while campers return home each afternoon. Resident Camp and Outdoor School (Day and Overnight) are both located at the YMCA’s Elk Trail Outdoor School on the edge of Elk Creek in the Upper Rogue. Camp Somewhere programs are located in picturesque settings across Oregon and are led by a team of staff who lead outdoor adventures and support new friendships.
The Rogue Valley Family YMCA states its mission as putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The organization focuses on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, and it identifies its core values as caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. The YMCA states that it is committed to being a welcoming community for all people and welcomes everyone from all dimensions of diversity.
The leadership team for these camp programs includes Gary “Flame” Taylor, Associate Executive Director. Most summers, the camp staff includes counselors who come from other countries, and in previous years counselors have come from Australia, Columbia, England, Scotland, and Switzerland. The YMCA is supported by the community through dues, fees, and donations.
