About
Youth Runner Camps includes cross country and running sessions such as a morning run with drills, an afternoon run, trail runs, a 9-miler at Timothy Lake, and a friendly 3000-meter cross country race. Campers also take part in activities like capture the flag, ultimate frisbee, board games, working on running journals, discussions, games, movies, a smoothie bar, skit night, swim time, bonfires, S’mores, and a team challenge.
• Ages: 11–18 years old
• Schedule: Main 2025 session runs August 4–8, with arrival on Monday and departure on Friday after awards at 11:30 am (four nights), plus an Early Arrivals option from Sunday after 4 pm through Friday (five nights); a 2026 Mt. Hood Middle School XC Camp session runs August 3–7. The basic daily schedule includes a 7:00 am wake up, 7:20 am morning run and drills, meals, speakers, activities, a 3:00 pm afternoon run, 4:00 pm swim time, evening phone time and running journals, and night events such as movies, discussions, skits, bonfires, and S’mores, with a 3000-meter cross country race and awards on Friday at 10:00 am.
• Price: Overnight Camp $1175 for four nights, Commuter option $625 for full days with activities and meals, and Early Arrivals Overnight Camp $1275 for five nights.
The program is led by Coach Pat Tyson, Distance Coach at Gonzaga University and former coach at Mead High School in Spokane, where the Harriers compiled a 180-8 record in dual meets, reached state competition for 18 consecutive years, and won 12 state titles, including a nine-year streak without a loss. Coach Pat Tyson was also Steve Prefontaine’s roommate at the University of Oregon. Coach Bob Williams, a former steeplechaser at the University of Oregon, and the Youth Runner Elite Middle School Camp team members Nick Slenning, Eliza Irish, Beni Balazs, Alex Slenning, Noah McMahan, and Gus Harquail are also part of the leadership and coaching group, along with experienced coaches and accomplished college athletes. Guest athletes and coaches visit in person or join by Zoom to tell their stories and answer questions, and scholarships may be available through a grant from Willamette TC, with applications submitted by email in a short written paragraph or two.
