About
SE Portland Girls Basketball Club offers a full basketball experience that includes games, tournaments, camps, and clinics. The program includes year round club activities and a competitive year round basketball program. It takes players at any skill level and conducts no tryouts.
• Ages: 6–13 years old
Formed in 2013, SE Portland Girls Basketball Club is a club basketball program for girls youth. The club states that any girl who wants to play, can play, and that it is affordably priced. Its mission is “Building confidence on and off the court. Club basketball for girls youth. Our goal is for your child to be successful at whatever level she chooses to play ⏤ whether recreational or competitive ⏤ so if she wants to compete in high school, she has the tools to succeed at tryouts and make her team.” The club reports having 27 teams and counting, with players from 24 different schools.
The leadership team includes founder Steve Cooper; co-founder Sarah Gredvig; board members Marvin Alvarez and Michael McDonald; and original board member and coach Annette Koegler Idler. Steve Cooper has coached girls youth basketball for 30 years and has coached 12 different teams. Sarah Gredvig first coached the Cleveland High School girls freshman team, then coached the JV team for two years, and has coached girls basketball for 12 years. Annette Koegler Idler currently coaches the Cleveland Warriors girls JV/JV2 teams, is the varsity girls assistant coach, and is a counselor at Reynolds Middle School.
The club highlights Multnomah University exposure and Coach Mendo Quick Handle camps as part of its offerings. One family notes that the club’s year round basketball, Multnomah University exposure, and Coach Mendo Quick Handle camps have served their family well. Another parent describes the club as “a gift to our community” and appreciates what the club does to help girls in need.
Parent testimonials describe the club as an excellent way to introduce a daughter to basketball, with coaching described as excellent and practices described as fun. One parent reports that their third-grade daughter played on a team for the first time and has already declared basketball her favorite sport. Another parent shares that their 9-year-old daughter joined in November 2021 knowing very little about the rules of the game and that her abilities and enthusiasm for being part of a team have developed enormously with volunteer coaches who are described as dedicated and knowledgeable. A family with two daughters, one very serious about basketball and one more focused on fun and friends, reports that the club has served both girls well over five years of working with Steve Cooper and notes that Steve Cooper never turns anyone away and has found a way to make club basketball affordable.
