About
Goldenball Youth Basketball is a team registration-based youth basketball program where kids play league games and take part in team practices. The program focuses on youth basketball through an eight-game season that includes both games and scheduled practice times for each registered team.
• Ages: 8–13 years old
• Schedule: Eight league games on Saturdays from January 17 through March 7, 2026, with one 55-minute weekday practice time slot per team
Games are part of an eight-game season that is divided into two halves, with a realignment after the first four weeks and no break between halves, and games may be played at different sites between the first and second halves. School gyms will be open for practice starting Monday, March 2, 2026, with practice times available Monday–Friday from 6–6:55 p.m., 7–7:55 p.m., and 8–8:55 p.m., and practice permits at most locations begin on November 3, 2025. Each registered team is guaranteed one 55-minute practice time slot per week, and no spectators are allowed at practice.
The program is for 3rd–7th grade and is a recreation program based on good sportsmanship and the development of basketball fundamentals, with a limited number of teams for each grade and a waitlist once capacity is met. The program does not have the capacity to register individuals, so teams must be formed by parents and volunteer coaches, and coaching three or more teams is not permitted. If a coach is coaching more than one team, an assistant coach is required for each team and must attend one of the coaches’ meetings, and the program relies on volunteer coaches to register a team, select players, and manage the details of their squad.
The program does not supply jerseys as part of the team fee, and each team must have at least matching t-shirts with 6" numbers on the back and no 3-digit numbers. Players are required to obtain shorts without pockets, and ball sizes for the 2025–2026 season are set as follows: 3rd and 4th grade boys and girls use a 27.5" (size 5) ball; 5th and 6th grade boys and girls use a 28.5" (size 6) ball; and 7th grade boys use a 28.5" (size 6) ball.
The purpose of Portland Parks & Recreation’s Goldenball youth basketball program is to encourage youth, regardless of ability, to learn the fundamentals of the game, develop a sense of fair play and good sportsmanship, experience the satisfaction of team play and individual cooperation, and have fun and enjoy playing the game of basketball. The program is led by Jennifer Rounseville, Recreation Coordinator II.
