Silverton Arts Association Classes for Adults and Youth
Silverton Art Center, 303 Coolidge St, Silverton, OR 97381
About
Silverton Arts Association Classes for Adults and Youth connects participants with teachers who have work experience with Disney, PBS, Stanford University, and more. The program takes place within an active arts community that includes open studio hours for visitors and members and a community arts space with free art supplies and coffee.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Open studio and community arts space hours are available Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday from 2pm–5pm
The Association states that its primary purpose is to nurture, exhibit, inform, and promote appreciation and practice of the arts in the greater Silverton area, and that through education it will increase public understanding and practice of the arts for present and future generations. Programming is described as affordable and professional. The organization’s leadership team includes Mike Turner (President), Anna Coleman (Treasurer), Mike Baggetta (Secretary), Jonathan Case (Board Member), Kate Durrant (Board Member), Simone Stewart (Board Member), Iris Ireland (Board Member), Kahlia Waters (Silverton Arts Festival Manager), and Anne Pinkowski (Programming Director, volunteer). Mike Turner is the creator of the award-winning autobiographical documentaries The Way We Talk (2016) and Monument (2023). Jonathan Case is an award-winning author and illustrator whose 2022 book Little Monarchs was named a best book of the year by NPR and School Library Journal, among others. Anne Pinkowski’s works have been exhibited nationally and have earned numerous awards for creativity and originality.
The Association provides art teachers and supplies for local public schools, serving over 1000 students in the 2023–2024 school year, and it hosts space for other local arts nonprofits like the Mural Society and Poetry Association. Resident artists host the Borland Community Arts Space, where visitors can use free art supplies and enjoy coffee in a creative community setting. The Silverton Arts Festival is scheduled to return in 2026 at Coolidge-McClaine Park with art, music, makers, and an annual arts festival, and multiple sponsorship levels are offered for that event (DaVinci, Van Gogh, Picasso, O’Keefe, Honored Supporter). One parent from a stained glass class describes the Silverton Arts Center as a valuable resource where they can support local artists, take classes, and feel part of the creative community, and a child from a Parent/Child Clay Workshop shares that art makes them feel happy because they can make creations and that they love learning and dinosaurs.
