About
The Caring Place Youth Programs offers a year-round After-School Program that includes an After-School Tutoring program, tutoring classes, and computer instruction. The program also operates a summer lunch program, a food bank, and a clothing bank, and tutors use educational materials along with computer instruction during tutoring sessions.
• Schedule: The Caring Place is open Monday–Thursday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and the food bank is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 PM to 3 PM.
The Caring Place Youth Programs operates at The Caring Place Youth Development Center and also runs a summer lunch program feeding roughly 65 kids between two locations at Little Lehigh in Allentown and Cumberland Gardens. The food bank offers canned goods, produce, fruits, vegetables, meats, kitchen supplies, and household goods, and the clothing bank is supported by volunteers from the community. Proceeds from the Taste of Soul restaurant on Hamilton Street, along with donations, help fund The Caring Place, and volunteers from the community can support after-school programs or assist with the clothing and food banks. Within The Caring Place building, there are available office spaces for lease.
The Caring Place was founded in June 1996 by Mary Griffin, and since 2004 it has secured its current Hamilton Street location. Mary Ellen Griffin serves as the Executive Director of The Caring Place Inc. The mission of The Caring Place is to provide programs and activities designed to help young people overcome the pressures and limitations of their environment, and its goals and objectives address the needs of these young people.
Steven Griffin with the Taste of Soul on Hamilton Street stated, “It makes me feel good to know that people are getting fed. The children get nutritional meals and are not just eating snacks and junk food and that they're going to go home on a full stomach.” Caring Place Summer Program Coordinator Rose Bates shared that a highlight is “to see the smile on their face and especially when they asked for seconds.”
